Uruguay is a safe place in general to travel. People is friendly and tourists are welcome any time. You should visit Montevideo, Colonia, Maldonado and Rocha, our best destinations. You won’t regret it.
Posted: August 4, 2025Quite safe in populated areas and during the day; in more outlying neighborhoods and at night it becomes a bit less safe, although pickpockets are present all day and everywhere. At night or in more remote or dangerous places, you could experience a more violent robbery. Regarding sexual violence, it is not one of the main crimes committed, but that doesn't mean it can't happen, especially at night.
Posted: July 19, 2025I feel like it depends. As a 20 year old woman I would never go outside alone after dark, you should always be with someone you know and trust even more if you’re going out to drink. It also depends on the area that you are but still you should always keep an eye out cause robberies are pretty common.
Posted: June 16, 2025I don’t recommend being aline at night. During the day its fine and people are very nice. Ask locals for directions and if you are unsure go inside a store or anything you can find. If you are a solo female traveler try to stay in a group or avoid being alone at night.

Like every massivly populated city you have safer places and not that secure places. The old city and the metropolitan área are pretty safe. Uruguayans are very nice and helpfull when in need. To avoid problems, don't act like a tourist, watch around you and be awere, don't leave your belongins where you can not see it, and be carefull at all times. I mean is common sense but even that sometimes is not that common.

Montevideo is a cute city, which city center really kept the vibes of the Spanish colonial architecture era. If you go there, try to check on a "Murga" or a "Candombe" show, both are really worth it! I felt extremely safe there
