There is a lot of pickpocketing in tourist areas. Areas of Lavapies should be avoided at night by woman walking alone. Other than that the city is super safe and easy to go around with, even at night.

In comparison with other places (South America, for instance), Spain is a pretty safe place for a woman. In the 5-6 years I've been living here I haven't really experienced sexual harassment in the streets or public spaces. Of course there are areas that are safer than others and crime rates have risen a bit during the last years. Still, if you come from a global south country you'll find that madrid is way friendlier and safer towards women in general.

I visited Madrid for two weeks as a minor and used the public transportation, including buses and the metro. I felt really safe — no one bothered me or harassed me, and everything went smoothly. It was a great experience.
Posted: May 10, 2025It’s a pretty safe city, where you’ll feel comfortable walking by yourself even at night. However, as any big city, you need to be careful about pickpokets and, specially around the marginalised areas in the south of the city, take care of where you go alone at night.

Madrid is, in general, a safe place to visit and be around (Except for a few neighborhoods), I prefer to avoid large masses of people and to walk alone at night, even tho nothing ever happened to me :)

Honestly I just love Spain I spent a whole week in Madrid and it felt like it was the best time of my life even though the weather wasn't perfect. I felt safe people are nice and there are a lot of activities that you can do. Especially during night time you don't feel alone because everyone is partying so I really recommend going there.

In June I’ll be living in Madrid, I’ve lived in Paraguay my whole life, so this is a big change for me. I’ve been to Madrid before, but just for a two-week trip — I did the whole museum thing and even visited Valencia too. Now I’m just hoping to find some girlfriends to hang out with or show me around a bit!
