Hi, all I wanted to say that I always walk alone at any time of the day. The situation with harassment on the street when I was a teenager got a little better (I didn’t get into severe situations). I live in the city center but even here young men could ask for the money or to take your phone (story from my male friend’s experience). I would give it 4/5

You can walk calmly at night, there are police stations on the streets, everyone is busy with their own affairs, you can feel free, but people will be happy to help you, the streets are light at night.

In Almaty, streets like Abay and Tole Bi are like long lines that stretch across the city. Generally speaking, the higher you go (towards the mountains), the safer and cleaner it is. The lower you go (towards the steppe), the more dangerous it can get. That doesn’t mean you will definitely get robbed, but you still need to be careful everywhere. Don’t just wander around without a plan or purpose. My friends often walk around in these areas, but they were born here and speak the local languages fluently. They know how to behave and where it’s safe to go. If you’re not from here or don’t know the area well, it’s better not to explore on your own. Be cautious and try not to act carelessly or recklessly. Most importantly, always go out with people you trust. Don’t just go with anyone or follow random plans. Safety should come first, even if a place looks okay during the day. Things can change at night. In short, stay alert, make smart choices, and surround yourself with people you know and trust. That’s the best way to enjoy the city safely.

Almaty is generally considered safe for travelers and residents if take standard precautions. Most visiting places trouble free and usually people are welcoming and helpful Public transport is the safest but avoid carry big pockets as on the bus mostly crowded

The upper part of the city is mostly safe. I don’t recommend tourists to visit lower part (lower than Tole bi street), cuz the crime rate there is higher. There is a lot of pickpockets around markets in south-east part of the city.

In the center is quite safe. I wouldn't suggest u to go to suburbs at night alone. However i always feel very safe here and walk alone after dark a lot. Moreover i go out with girls and its totally fine.

I feel safe, because there are a lot of other people that also do it. You should take warm clothes, water, food, snacks, some sweets, maybe chocolate, spf, T-shirt, socks, good mood. No need to pay for entry or overnight stay, take everything with you, you just need to rent a tent and other accessories.
Posted: May 23, 2025Experienced: July, 2024in July 2023, my family and I flew to Kazakhstan (Almaty). This was my first trip. Although we did not visit many places, I really enjoyed this trip. Almaty has landscapes of incredible beauty, mountains, nature, fruits and berries grow right on the streets. The city itself is also very beautiful, because it has beautiful architecture and many garlands and lights, as well as many restaurants with live music, decorated with garlands and flowers. To be honest, I didn't really like the local cuisine, since I'm not a fan of spices and fatty foods (this is purely my personal opinion), but some dishes were really tasty, and, importantly, everyone in Kazakhstan is served in large portions ;) What As for prices, for me, being a Russian, the prices were quite amazing, since everything here costs 2-3 times lower than in Russia (I even managed to bring a whole suitcase of snacks and drinks lol ). I also want to note that Kazakhstan has a rather warm climate, I can’t stand the heat, but here it felt much more pleasant, and we also lived in an observatory on a mountain, which helped us escape the heat. We visited the famous Medeo and climbed 842 steps, terribly tired, but admired the beautiful views. We also went up the funiculars to Kok-Tube, where we visited the zoo, fed the animals, and also visited the amusement park there. Not far from this place we also went to the cinema. We also visited the Butakovsky waterfall, where we were able to fully experience and see the beauty, and also take many beautiful photos. We also visited an open water park and a market. Also we visited the park of the first president, where we just walked, ate ice cream and admired the viewsWe had such a short but eventful vacation, I liked everything very much and I would like to visit Almaty again ♡
