Food: It’s heavily meat based and most places don’t even advertise vegetarian options but you can always manage somehow… Safety: I feel safe here, but stay away from back streets where there are no shops. I’ve noticed a few child beggars so keep purse close Budget: This is the most conservative city in Turkey, according to consensus by Google search. Wearing a headscarf and modest clothing is highly recommended. And, unless you’re already from a conservative culture, your most conservative will be less than the average woman. But, it’s safe. It’s very cheap by western standards. A fancy meal will cost about 300tl, average random place maybe 40-80tl, but if you find the right falafel or doner place, you’ll pay 20tl. A USD is about 18tl. Major museums (archeological, cultural, Mevlana aka Rumi) are free. There are also whirling dervish performances(Sema) that are also, apparently, free! It’s likely shopkeepers won’t speak English, or if they do, very minimal. Busses and trams require a card that you cannot get at every stop, so if you plan on using public transport, plan ahead. The city is very walkable. There’s Aladdin Park in the middle. Accommodation: Zafer Pension is about 250tl a night for a private room. I highly recommend them! Recommendations: Cover hair and wear modest clothing. Don’t engage with creepy or aggressive men… the usual. Carry tissues bc public toilets don’t have paper
