North Macedonia

North Macedonia is a beautiful and diverse country in the heart of the Balkans. From the ancient ruins of Ohrid to the stunning Lake Prespa, North Macedonia is a great place to explore and experience the unique culture of the region. The country is also home to some of the best hiking and outdoor activities in the Balkans, as well as a variety of delicious local cuisine.

Marija

My name is Марија (Mariya), I am 22years old. This year I am getting my bachelor’s degree as a student of a double major program in Political Science and Psychology, but I am pursuing a career as an educator. I am interested in everything! Anything you’d like to talk to me about, I’d like to hear it. I try to be friendly, outgoing and enjoy life with a smile, but sometimes I get overwhelmed and then I love watching stand-up comedy or going to stand-up poetry performances to lift up my mood a bit. I’m a huge book lover, and proud small home library owner. Writing is a huge hobby of mine, I write constantly and I’m hoping to publish some of my works soon. My days are always so full and busy that I got very used to the lifestyle, so I sometimes don’t know how to slow down. Hosting somebody encourages me to stay grounded and open-minded as I meet people from across the Globe, but it also means that I get to relax, do something spontaneous and pay respect to somebody that gets to live in my home for a bit.

I loved North Macedonia. I stayed in Ohrid at old town hostel which was lovely and one of my favourites ever. In Ohrid there’s loads of swimming and a cool church and monasteries to visit. In Skopje I stayed at Get Inn hostel which was also nice and very cheap. There’s loads to do in Skopje, including mother Theresa memorial, the main square, all the bridges, the archeological museum and the fortress which is free, the old bazar and the old train station.
Itinerary: 3 days in Ohrid 3 days in Skopje Safety: I felt super safe. Recommendations: Macedonia is a beautiful country and really an underrated travel destination.
- Skopje (capital) - good hiking tracks in the Vodno mountain range which isn't far from the centre - Visit the old Turkish Bazaar, great little stores and cafes there. - Great places for hiking: Galichnik near Ohrid. I've heard you can also do horse riding there - Kokino megalithic observatory (about 60km north east of Skopje) - St Joakim Monastery in Kriva Palanka (towards the Bulgarian border) - Ohrid for its lake and the old town full of churches and Samoil's Fortress - Smolarski Waterfalls in Strumica in the country's south east - Mavrovo National Park to the west - Popova Kuma winery in the town of Demir Kapija in the central region of Macedonia. Other good wineries also in that region

Hosting

One thing that is really important to me is interaction. I would love to host you as you are a part of my family or closest group of friends. Obviously, I respect privacy and I’ll try to give you your own space and time, especially when you ask for it, but if you plan for a loner trip, I’ll probably be too annoying for you. Still, if you’re in desperate need for a bed, we can make it work. You’d be staying in a private room in my apartment with my family, but it would be mostly me and my little sister in the house. The apartment is located at the center of the city, so everything is easily accessible, however there is a lot of noise from cars and people passing by. There is a big couch that could comfortably fit two people, we can add an air mattress for a third person. I’ll provide sheets, pillows, towels. There is air conditioning and a little balcony connected to the room(view of the park and square)as well as a Wi-fi TV. Free Wi-Fi. We all share one bathroom. You can freely utilize shampoo, conditioner, blow drier, washing machine, iron etc. In case you haven’t made any meal plans for the day, our fridge is always filled and available to anyone in the house. LGBTQ friendly.

My Conditions

Smoking is allowed on the balcony. My little sister (9years) will be at the house so I would highly appreciate no drinking at the house, nor coming home drunk. Sadly, we are unable to welcome any pets due to apartment policies. Accidents can obviously happen at any time but we would like to ask you not to destroy any furniture or amenities on purpose, since we are aren’t a wealthy family and it would take us a considerable amount of money and time to repair anything that is broken. Respecting the space and people as well as everyone’s privacy is important to us, having a guest with a positive attitude is always welcomed.
