How safe is Saint Martin?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Saint Martin is generally safe, yet nighttime safety greatly depends on the area. More populated and touristy areas like Maho Beach and Marigot tend to be safer due to their busyness and frequent patrolling by police, whereas more remote areas can be less predictable. Always be alert of your surroundings and try not to display valuable belongings overtly. While instances of crime are not particularly high, it is always best to exercise common caution, such as preferring well-lit paths, avoiding isolated areas, and not sharing your travel plans or accommodation details with strangers.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Saint Martin is generally safe and reliable. Small vans or minibuses, commonly known as 'gypsies,' serve as the primary mode of public transport. They are commonly used by locals and tourists alike, making them a comfortable option. The drivers are typically friendly and helpful. Routes cover most of the island, making it easy to navigate. However, there isn't a strict timetable, leading to occasional long waits. For safety, avoid empty buses or late night travels. Always be aware of your surroundings, especially with your belongings.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Saint Martin generally maintains a friendly and welcoming environment for tourists. As a solo female traveler, you may occasionally encounter harmless flirtation or attention, but instances of serious harassment are quite rare. As always, remain vigilant and be mindful of your surroundings.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Saint Martin, though popular with tourists, has a moderate risk of petty crimes. Being cognizant of your surroundings is generally sufficient to avoid situations of pickpocketing or purse-snatching. Like many tourist locations, there are incidences of theft from rental cars or hotel rooms, so refrain from leaving valuables unattended. Stay alert in crowded places where such crimes are more likely to occur.
