Solo female travel in Myanmar

Situated in the heart of Southeast Asia, Myanmar, also known as Burma, is a land brimming with rich culture, natural beauty, and a long history. Known for its glittering temples, including the iconic Shwedagon Pagoda that elegantly towers the skyline of Yangon, this nation stands as a testament to the profound spirituality of its people. Myanmar is home to the world's largest reclining Buddha in Mudon and the mystical landscapes of Bagan, where an extensive array of ancient temples stretches across the verdant plains. Visitors can also explore serene Inle Lake, ringed with traditional stilt-house villages and floating gardens, to experience the unique way of life of the local Intha people. Famed for its rare, distinctive gems like rubies, sapphires, and jade, Myanmar is a jewel, literally and metaphorically, that attracts travellers seeking an exotic, largely undiscovered destination.

Is Myanmar good for solo travel?

Safety:

Safety:Safe

Myanmar can be considered moderately safe for solo female travelers. The locale is primarily quite respectful and friendly. However, it's essential to be cautious, particularly during the nights or in secluded places as pickpocketing and petty thefts can occur. Issues also arise from political instability causing occasional civil unrest. The most significant point advised is to respect local customs and traditions to avoid any unnecessary attention. Lastly, only registered taxis and transportation methods should be used for better safety.
Transport:

Transport:Moderate

Traveling through Myanmar can be a bit of a challenge due to language barriers and regulatory restrictions in some areas. However, the country's natural beauty and cultural richness are well worth the effort. Public transport is available, but amenities are basic and long distances can be uncomfortable. Road conditions are often poor outside major cities and weather conditions can also affect travel. However, local people are generally helpful and friendly towards tourists.
Things to do:

Things to do:Interesting

Myanmar offers a rich historical and cultural experience for travelers. From fascinating ancient temples in Bagan, spiritual sites like the Golden Pagoda in Yangon, rural life in Inle Lake, untouched beaches in Ngapali to adventurous hiking trails in Hsipaw. The country also has a vibrant street food scene and handicraft markets that are wonderful to explore. However, due to limited tourism infrastructure, travel may sometimes be challenging.
Food:

Food:Above average

Myanmar offers a diverse array of dishes to delight your palate. The country's cuisine is a unique blend of flavors, drawing influences from India, China and Thailand. It's possible to savor a variety of dishes, from rich and hearty curries, to light and tangy salads. Mohinga, a fragrant fish soup served with rice noodles, is a staple breakfast dish and definitely a must-try. Street food lovers will also enjoy the buzzing street food culture. However, for some foreigners, the extensive use of oil and some unique flavors can be a bit challenging to get used to.
Budget:

Budget:Moderate

Myanmar is moderately budget-friendly for solo female travelers. Meals, accommodation, and local transportation are relatively inexpensive, but larger expenses like flights and entrance fees for major attractions can add up quickly. Overall, costs are slightly higher than neighboring countries such as Thailand or Vietnam.

Is Myanmar worth visiting?

Solo travel experience

Hooray! I spent a month traveling around Myanmar a few years ago and I really enjoyed it. My recommendations: - Dress modestly, i.e. without shorts and remember to cover your arms or provide yourself with a scarf/pareo for visiting pagodas. Shoes with Velcro, such as flip flops, are a good solution because you can't wear shoes in pagodas. - Check restaurant reviews! Burmese cuisine can be really good or really bad. - I fell in love with Bagan and with trekking from Kalaw to Inle Lake. - The journey can be very tiring, especially traveling by land. Roads are narrow, winding and still being built manually. Also make sure that you get visas for all the countries before you set off!
