Safety:Moderate

Mombasa, while a stunning city with rich history, is often characterized by instances of petty theft. It is essential for solo travelers to take precautions such as avoiding isolated areas, especially at night, and ensuring their belongings are secured. Mindful of these aspects, Mombasa can be a rewarding travel destination.

Transport:Moderate

Mombasa is relatively navigable but not without challenges. The city features a variety of public and private transport options, both formal and informal. Locals rely heavily on minibuses (matatus) and motorbike taxis (boda bodas), which are quite affordable but might seem chaotic for first-time visitors due to lack of clear routes and schedules. Understandably, language barrier can be another obstacle if you don't speak Swahili. Hiring a local guide or using a reliable navigation app could be beneficial. However, certain popular areas like Old Town and Fort Jesus are walkable and full of interesting sights, shops and restaurants.

Things to do:Interesting

Mombasa offers a rich collection of attractions and activities for solo female travelers. The city's coastal location provides a myriad of water-related adventures such as snorkeling, diving, and dhow cruises. Historical and cultural landmarks, like Fort Jesus and Old Town, offer interesting insights into the region's past. Experiencing the local food scene, shopping markets, and interacting with welcoming locals also contribute towards an engaging visit. However, safety precautions, especially at night, should be considered.

Food:Above average

Mombasa offers a rich culinary experience full of variety, reflecting the city's coastal location and its history as a point of trade and cultural exchange. You can expect a blend of African, Arabian, and Indian cuisine featuring fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and local spices like coriander, turmeric, and coconut, which are used in many dishes. Street food is quite popular and a wonderful way to experience local flavors, where you can sample items such as grilled maize and cassava crisps. However, hygiene might be a concern in some areas, so be cautious. The level of vegetarian-friendly food is decent but could be improved, which is why the food scene in Mombasa isn't rated as a perfect 5.

Budget:Moderate

Mombasa has a moderate level of affordability. Accommodation is varied, with options ranging from cheap guesthouses to luxury hotels. Eating out can be inexpensive especially if you stick with local cuisines found in local markets and street food, which are also great ways to experience the real flavors of Kenya. Attractions like the Mombasa Marine National Park and the Old Town have entrance fees, but they are reasonably priced. However, safaris, which are a big draw for tourists, can be quite expensive.

Is Mombasa worth visiting?

Solo travel experience

Everyone I met was so so welcoming and friendly. Prices were expensive in the supermarket and food choice was limited if you are vegetarian. But the local markets had amazing fresh produce for cheap, don't be afraid to haggle!
