How safe is Kingston?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Kingston can be quite a challenging destination for solo female travelers especially during the nights. While there are definitely safer areas to be found, others can be particularly dangerous after sundown. Local advice and caution is highly recommended when navigating around the city in the evening hours. Always avoid secluded areas and remain in well-lit, populated areas as much as possible. It's advised to use a trusted taxi service for transportation rather than walking alone at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Unsafe

Public transportation in Kingston, specifically, can be rather challenging and confusing for solo female travelers. Buses and minivans, primarily known as 'route taxis', tend to be overcrowded and may follow irregular schedules. Furthermore, instances of theft and unwanted attention can potentially occur. Thus, it is advisable to stay cautious and consider arranging private transportation or utilizing trusted taxi companies, especially during the night.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:High

As a solo female traveler in Kingston, you may experience noticeable street harassment. This often manifests as unsolicited comments or catcalling, especially in crowded, busy areas. However, the majority of these incidents usually do not escalate beyond verbal remarks. It is advised to adopt a confident demeanor, avoid undue attention, and dress modestly to respect the local culture. Always prioritize your safety and trust your instincts in situations that make you uncomfortable.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:High

Petty crimes such as pickpocketing, bag snatching, and other forms of theft are fairly common in Kingston. Especially in crowded public places and tourist spots. It's essential to remain vigilant, keep personal belongings secure, avoid displaying expensive items or large sums of cash in public, and avoid isolated areas especially after dark.

Jamaica in general can be a violent place. Kingston is a city and this has a high concentration of people which increases the likelihood of violence and crime. I’ve had my (old) apartment broken into once, however it was poorly secured (no burglar bars). I’ve never been mugged although once, I’ve been pickpocketed, and had a necklace snatched many years ago. I’ve been groped before but when I was much younger. I don’t particularly have fear when I take public transportation but caution should be exercised. Taking private transport (uber etc) reduces the likelihood of mishaps.

Kingston Jamaica is a lovely country overall...Tourists always come here basically every month to enjoy the sunshine and fun activities that jamaica has to offer... My advise when visiting any country you still have to be vigilant and cautious of your surroundings...but in all I can positively say Jamaica is a fun and interesting country to visit...
