How safe is Damascus?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Very unsafe

Damascus, especially at night, advises extreme caution due to the ongoing civil unrest, war, and terrorism that is prevalent in the country. Walking alone at night is highly risky and not recommended due to cases of abduction, armed conflict, and random violence that might occur. Proper planning and precautionary measures should be taken if travel is unavoidable.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Unsafe

Navigating public transportation in Damascus can involve multiple factors to consider. Bus services are often overcrowded and can be quite chaotic. Additionally, there is often limited information available regarding routes and schedules. This can make it challenging for tourists. Taxis can vary in reliability. It may also be difficult for foreign women due to cultural differences and language barriers. Using a reliable and authorized taxi service (with bilingual drivers) or private transportation could be a more secure choice. Regardless, always be aware of your surroundings and stay cautious.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

In Damascus, harassment isn't as rampant compared to other global cities, yet it's not immune to it. Women may encounter instances of men gazing or passing unnecessary comments, primarily if dressed in Western attire. The locally accepted dress-code of the more conservative society might be one catalyst for such a reaction. However, people are generally respectful and verbal harassment is minimal, physical harassment is considerably rare. Combining caution and cultural sensitivity substantially reduces any discomfort.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:High

While Damascus, the capital city, is comparatively secure, instances of pick-pocketing, thefts, and mugging are still reported. It's advised to stay vigilant, avoid less crowded places especially at night and always keep your belongings close to you.

Harassment in public places and transportation is a really big issue here so make sure to always be careful walking around, also watch for your stuff stealing hand bags from women is very common, even golden necklaces and earrings aren't really advised because if someone thought they were real gold they might rip it off your neck/ear
