Is Palestine safe for solo female travelers?

Although Palestine has a rich history and culture, safety for solo female travelers can vary. Generally, people are hospitable and respectful towards female tourists. However, in certain areas the socio-political climate can be volatile. It is advisable to dress modestly, avoid walking alone at night, and always be aware of the local customs and laws. It is also important to monitor travel advisory or news updates prior to your trip. Research well, use common sense, and be mindful of the regions you are visiting.

How safe is Palestine?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Traveling in Palestine can be a rich and rewarding experience, but caution is necessary, particularly during the night hours. It is generally advised for solo female tourists to avoid walking alone at night in some areas, as the situation can be unpredictable. Public transportation is known to be less reliable during the evening, so arranging your travel plans during daylight hours is recommended. As always, your safety will largely depend on staying in well-lit areas, being aware of your surroundings, and having a clear itinerary.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Palestine includes buses, taxis and service taxis. They are generally safe, though some might be inconvenient as they don't follow a strict schedule or route. Females should be aware of cultural sensitivities surrounding interaction with men, particularly in more conservative areas. It's also important to take caution during late hours and at remote locations. Safety might vary depending on the political situation, so staying updated with local news is advised.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

In Palestine, like much of the Middle East, the culture is quite traditional, but street harassment is not generally a significant issue. Respect is key, and decent behavior and dress are expected. That being said, undercurrents of harassment can occasionally be encountered, primarily stares or relatively harmless comments. However, usually, these cases are not overly aggressive or threatening. It is recommended to dress modestly and be aware of local customs and expectations to minimize any potential issues.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Petty crimes in Palestine, such as pickpocketing or bag-snatching, do occur, particularly in crowded places and major tourist sites. However, it is generally safe for travelers who take basic precautions like keeping personal belongings secure and being wary of their surroundings. As a solo female traveler, maintaining a low profile can also deter unwanted attention.
Tap water:

Tap water:Unsafe

Tap water in Palestine is generally considered unsafe to drink. The quality of the water supply can be low due to aging infrastructure, contamination, and general lack of access to clean water sources. Bottled water or filtered water is highly recommended for drinking and cooking purposes.

Solo travel experience

Beautiful people, cobblestoned city streets. Delicious food, historical sites in Nazareth, Jerusalem, Jericho. Current conflict means not safe to travel now, but if and when things settle, I highly recommend experiencing this complex corner of the world yourself. Much to be learned.

About Me

Hi, I'm Luhar and for the past 7 years I have been living abroad as an international student. Graduated from United World College (UWC) in Germany and I'm about to start my last year doing a BA at College of the Atlantic in the US after which I will hopefully continue for a MA in conflict studies. I always appreciate sitting down for a cup of tea and a conversation and getting to hear stories and learn about places. Cultures, justice and arts are especially close to my heart.
