Is Skopje Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Skopje is, generally speaking, a safe city for solo female travelers. Locals are usually friendly and willing to help. The city center is well lit and busy even at night. However, as in any city in the world, there exists some petty crime like pickpocketing, particularly in crowded places, as well as occasional reports of street harassment. It's important to remain aware of your surroundings and follow general safety precautions, such as not displaying valuable items in public and avoiding deserted areas at night.

First of all, I have to say that it is a very cute little Balkan city. I went to the Chinese restaurant and the ambiance and food were very nice. There is a bridge that divides the country into two parts. On one side, there are sidewalks from the Ottoman period. The part of the city we call the old town is where you can see many Turkish restaurants and cafes. Of course, you can also see many traces from the Ottoman period. The other part is in a completely European order, as if there are two...

Group travel

This time of the year the weather was rainy and a bit cold. If you like warm weather I would recommend not coming in April. City center is very nice, lots of things to see and the restaurants in the city center are amazing with excellent food.

Solo travel

Skopje is a very interesting city. You can walk through the entire city. I felt very safe despite the attention. The bazaar was quite nice. I participated in a free city walk and spent time at Alexander Square. Shopping in Skopje was also quite good.

I would say its pretty safe from what I've experienced through my whole life. You should be careful on the streets from cars and I just avoid dark places especially next to the river or rural places and thats it. Ofcourse there are crimes, everywhere as well but most of them are not from around.

I wouldn't recommend going alone on the other side of the river. Because of people want to lure in tourists to sell them expencive things, charge them more. I haven't heard of robbing or pickpocket but just be careful and not flashing jewlery or phone

In my 30 years of living I almost never ran into any life threatening situations. Be aware of your surroundings and don’t agree to go with strangers in low light areas. Travel with branded taxis only to avoid getting scamed

It is, most of the timest, but still nowdays i think it got way less safe for a woman travelling alone for example but if you stick to the center area, you are fine. Just dont go outside of the center region

About me

Hi. My name is Ines. I'm 38 years old. I live already twenty years in Skopje. I am working from home most of the time I'm spending at home. When I have time to travel, I usually go, on a couple of days to different places. Up until now, I haven't traveled alone outside my country, but I like like to do so at some point. I usually go on vacation with a lot of my friends. I have adopted two cats, two years ago, so now I'm kind of spending more time at home. For my daily activities, they usually are revolving around my career and upgrading. I am a pisces if it matters, so i am an artistic soul. I like music, museums and history
