Is Lebanon Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Lebanon, notably a cosmopolitan city with a rich history, can be a fascinating place to visit. However, safety of solo female travellers can be a concern. The societal norms can be conservative in most areas, and women are expected to dress modestly. Instances of harassment and unwanted attention are not unheard of. Also, political instability and sporadic violent incidents, although generally not targeting tourists, might pose risks. Transportation safety is yet another concern and scams might be prevalent. Therefore, proper planning, caution, and respect for local customs is strongly advised.

Safety overview

Safety at night:Unsafe

Lebanon, specifically Beirut, has areas that are safe and other areas that are less safe. Always be aware of your surroundings and avoid less populated or poorly lit areas, especially at night. It's advisable to use reliable transportation rather than walking alone at night. Lebanon is generally safe but safety conditions can change rapidly due to local events. Always stay updated on local news and take necessary precautions for personal safety.

Public transportation: Moderate

Public transportation in Lebanon is relatively safe in general. However, you might face issues like lack of cleanliness and organization, unregulated schedules, or over-crowded minibuses. It's essential to stay aware of your surroundings and keep a close eye on your belongings during rush hours.

Street harassment: Moderate

Street harassment in Lebanon can vary by location, however, it does exist and is not uncommon. While it's not a major threat, solo female travelers may at times face unwanted attention especially in busy public markets or less touristic areas. Usually, it amounts to non-violent and non-physical harassment such as inappropriate comments or stares. Always maintain a confident demeanor, dress modestly, and trust your intuition.

Petty crimes:Moderate

While Lebanon is generally safe for tourists, petty crimes like pick-pocketing and purse snatching exist, especially in crowded public places and tourist hotspots. It is, therefore, advisable to stay alert, avoid carrying large sums of money or valuable items, and always keep an eye on your belongings.

Tap water:Unsafe

While Lebanon has made strides in improving their water system, the tap water is generally not recommended for drinking. The quality of tap water can vary greatly across different regions and even in different buildings. Even locals usually prefer bottled water. For tourists, it's safest to drink bottled or treated water to avoid any stomach upset or more serious issues.

Solo travel experience

I was in Lebanon for 5 days and had a good time as a solo traveler. Lebanon is a diverse and welcoming country. People are friendly and welcomed me everywhere I went. Most people speak English. I hired drivers to take me to places like Byblos, Baalbek and Beit ed-Dine palace. They were respectful, professional, and informative drivers.

Solo travel experience

I have been there in November and felt safe and would always go back. Lebanese people are friendly and I just wish there would be a solution for all the problems they are facing. I recommend bringing the cash and not using the credit card as you will get ripped off on the exchange rate.

Group travel experience

Iโ€™ve visited Lebanon many times but never solo. I always went with someone from the area and stayed with them. I recommend staying in Beirut as other cities can be very conservative and knowing some, even if itโ€™s just a little of Arabic. Overall, Lebanon is great but I definitely recommend caution.
