How safe is Kosovo?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Kosovo is relatively safe at night, certainly when compared to many other countries. The main cities such as Prishtina or Prizren are generally secure with people taking walks or sitting in cafes even late at night. However, like any other place, it is advised to avoid dark and deserted places and always stay in well-lit areas where there are a number of people present. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing or purse-snatching may occur, but violent crimes are rare. However, it's always important to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings. Although locals are generally helpful and hospitable, it is best to avoid unsolicited company at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Kosovo such as buses and taxis are generally reliable, but like any location, it is advisable to be alert and cautious for personal possessions. The majority of the local population is friendly and helpful, although language may pose a barrier. It's also important to note that schedules can be unpredictable sometimes. Stick to well-populated areas, especially at night, and be aware of your surroundings.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

In Kosovo, street harassment is typically not prominent. Locals tend to be very friendly, respectful and hospitable, often going out of their way to help you. Nevertheless, like any place, it can happen, distinctly in larger urban areas. It's advisable to dress modestly and avoid overtly revealing outfits to reduce unwanted attention. Remember, confidence in presentation can also deter any potential attention. As always, practicing general street smarts and self-awareness, especially at night, is suggested.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Kosovo has been trying to rebuild its reputation and image after past conflicts. While petty crimes like pickpocketing, purse-snatchings, and theft can occur, especially in crowded areas and tourist spots, they are not extremely common. As with any country, it's important to remain vigilant, secure your valuables, and avoid displaying expensive items in public. Generally speaking, if you take these precautions, your risk of experiencing petty crime in Kosovo is relatively low.

Pristina, Family travel

I would not recommend solo travel. Its a safe space for families tho! Very nice people. You should know a local to show around, that would make it safer. Pristina mall was very fun with lots of activities!

Pristina, Group travel

Visited Kosovo (flew into Pristina) September 2023. It was my friend (female) and myself. We stayed 1 night and would recommend. There wasn’t quite a lot to do and 6 hours the next day was more than enough. There were lots of stray (very friendly) dogs around! Very protective of women we noticed. However, it was very clear that most men were not friendly towards them. Everywhere her and I walked at night there were dogs near us and growling at guys which was interesting. Didn’t really see any women walking at night. Food was really god and cheap! But again, not a lot to do. They all really liked the fact we were Americans (I live in London now). But met some great people on our walking tour. Then we left for Albania by bus.

Kosovo, Group travel

I took a day trip to Kosovo from Skopje, North Macedonia today with my older brother and his girlfriend. We first visited Pristina, the capital, and then went over to Prizren. Our guide told us that it is very safe and we did not have to worry about pick pockets while in the city. The history here is fascinating and very complicated. I wish we would have stayed for a whole day in one of the cities instead of just a tour, but it was still amazing!

Kosovo, Solo travel

Kosovo is probably the least visited place I've been to. I really liked it there. This place is not stereotypically "beautiful" (although Prizren is), but it was really interesting to see it with my own eyes.

Kosovo, Solo travel

I visited Pristina and Prizren and had a great time in both cities. Kosovo is not a traditional "hotspot" for tourists, which I really liked. The local residents turned out to be extremely nice - I even got lost at one point trying to find a restaurant, and a pair of locals lead me to it. The rural area is also very beautiful, so I highly recommend it.

Kosovo, Group travel

I had the opportunity to visit Kosovo, specifically Prizren and Pristina. Among these two cities, Prizren charmed me the most, despite its small size. I managed to see everything I wanted in just two days. Additionally, I consider Kosovo a safe place for women, as my group, consisting of three girls, did not encounter any problems.

Kosovo, Solo travel

My solitary journey to Kosovo was an incredible experience, which I really enjoyed! The locals were incredibly hospitable and helpful, and everything was very affordable. Among the places I visited, I particularly valued Prizren, which offered a completely different experience than Pristina. In Pristina, I visited a nearby bear sanctuary, whereas in Prizren, I went on a fantastic hike to see an amazing view of the city. I also recommend a day trip to Skopje in Macedonia, which is only an hour and a half bus ride away. There, you can stroll freely and it offers a unique experience. Everywhere I went, great walking tours were offered, and I felt completely safe throughout my entire journey.

Gjilan

Gjilan is a relatively safe city with nice people. It mostly contains families that have lived there for a long time. Most people know each other or have common friends and families. People are kind and welcoming! Crime rates mostly concern young men that get involved in illegal activities and hang out with the wrong people.
