Really enjoyed my recent solo trip to Belize. My first stop was in San Ignacio at the Maya Mountain Lodge. I felt very safe in San Ignacio - no harassment, and everyone was friendly and welcoming. Really felt in love with the place and there are fun adventurous things to do such as the ATM caves and Mayan sites. I felt very safe walking around in the day (but as with all holidays, refrained from walking alone at night - but that’s my own universal rule) Travelled through Belize City to catch a ferry. The city is known for high crime rates and is generally somewhere for tourists to get out of quick. I was asked for money (begging) in my first 5minutes of arrival and felt uneasy with all my belongings, but otherwise I got out quickly and without issue as most tourist guides will recommend you do so. Then I went to on to Caye Caulker. This place is truly remarkable. There is plenty to do and I felt safe there. The island is busy, small and well lit. Men do make comments (‘Hi beautiful’ for example) which is unnerving but comments stayed at that level. The island is beautiful and there is so much to see and do. It feels like a dream island Lastly, I spent my final day in San Pedro. Whilst nothing happened, I felt uneasy there though I can’t put my finger on why. I wouldn’t recommend or return although I’ve heard from many others who loved the place. Maybe it was just that in comparison to San Ignacio and Caye Caulker where I felt so at ease, San Pedro felt different No troubles through my whole 8 days in Belize where I went out and explored every day. Would recommend to female solo travellers - 7/10
Posted: January 27, 2025Felt very safe as a couple, I wouldn’t walk alone as a female at night in Belize city however. The villages felt very safe, as well as the islands. The people were extremely friendly and helpful. The food was good—stay local for the best experiences.
