Most of the city is very safe. Areas like Calle Loíza and La Placita late at night have lots of people around and are well lit. I walk at night in the city center all the time. There are occasional headlines of random violence in the news, but I don't personally know anyone who has been involved.

Overall, yes, is generally safe. There’s a strong sense of community. That said, like anywhere, safety can vary by how you move through spaces and time. Just stay aware, like you would in any urban setting.
Posted: June 25, 2025As every place around, Puerto Rico has its issues with safety. In here I haven't had any situations regarding it because im always aware of my surroundings and the people I go out with. If I feel something odd Im not gonna stay there. So really thats my only advice. Always talk to the locals about a place you want to go and follow their advices. We are very good in hospitality and we love out country too mucho so we want people to have a great time and experience visiting our places and taking care of them firstly.

I live in the intersection between Cupey, rio piedras and San Juan, a big and diverse area , and honestly, I feel safe here. I’m comfortable walking alone at night, especially in residential neighborhoods like El Señorial or Los Paseos. Like in any city, you should stay aware—sometimes at gas stations or stoplights, a homeless person might approach and raise their voice, but I’ve never had an actual issue or felt in danger. Some parts of Cupey, especially near public housing areas, can have more noise or activity, but it really depends on the street. Public transportation isn’t very reliable around here, so if you’re visiting, I’d definitely recommend renting a car.
Posted: June 7, 2025I moved here from Michigan early 2024. Since I’ve lived here, I’ve moved three different times (due to issues with the homeowners pet policies, nothing significant). My first neighborhood had some people down the street who would part-take in “cocacola” (if you know what I mean) and definitely dealt drugs from that house. But they never posed a threat to me or anyone else from my knowledge, it was just uncomfortable to be stared at by them walking by and the erotic behaviors from the drugs. There is an issue with homelessness here and drug use so be prepared to see this in many areas of the island. Nonetheless, the people won’t necessarily bother you. They may ask for money or make an inappropriate comment in spanish but that’s about it. Men here also choose to “honk” as a form of “flirting” if you’re out and about walking somewhere so be prepared for that. I think tourists may be more dangerous than actual locals here in all reality 😂

We hitchhiked into Rincón and it was completely safe and went well! We hitchhiked out as well. Everyone is so nice. A few locals kept telling us that Rincón is one of the safest areas in Puerto Rico.
