Nicaragua is not known to be the safest place in Central America but felt really safe as a woman even going on a run did not pose any problems. Men are respectful of women and I felt at peace more than in any other places
Posted: June 14, 2024Nicaragua is my favorite country in Central America. I felt very safe there all the time (I was traveling alone) and I used buses for locals, it was an extraordinary adventure. Ometepe is my favorite place.

Hey! I’m Phoebe, I’m 22 and from Stafford in the West Midlands, UK. I’m just finishing my Masters in Foreign Policy at Lancaster University and taking a gap year from September onwards. I freelance in climate and youth social impact spaces (it’s difficult to explain 😅). I’m looking to travel a bit outside of the cultures I know, and am looking at Central America in early 2025. Because I’d be a young woman alone I’m looking for a young female travel buddy! Key things! I’m mostly alcohol-free and only have the occasional drink. I have chronic back pain so I’m not big on hiking but I’d like to try smaller, easier hikes with big payoffs (Volcano Pacaya? 👀). I’m quite quiet and need more downtime, but am often very energetic. Lmk if you’d want to travel together!

We went to Leon (be sure to go to the cathedral's roof) and Managua, it was really beautiful. We only had a long weekend for Thanksgiving when we lived in Costa Rica, so we had to skip sandboarding on the volcano and we didn't manage to get to the beach. But we managed to climb the Masaya mountain at night, which was incredible - standing on the edge of an active volcano. A baseball game in Leon will cost you a few dollars and it is worth its price. If we had time, we really wanted to go to Ometepe.
Posted: November 12, 2022Stay in Ometepe for a few nights. If you want to have fun, try to arrange your stay in Granada to coincide with the Friday parties at the treehouse. San Juan also has fun on Sundays! Popoyo was my favourite place in Nicaragua - surfing and super chill vibes. Leon is also great, we stayed at a hostel called poco a poco, which in my opinion had better facilities than Bigfoot, but you can still take part in the volcanic skateboard tour with them. Nicaragua was my favourite country in Central America, I can't wait to go back!
