I loved Kazakhstan and with a clear heart I can recommend it. Almaty and Astana are amazing cities, and the Tien Shan mountains are astounding. People in Kazakhstan are also some of the friendliest I have ever met, and I felt so safe there.

I traveled alone to Kazakhstan and spent 1.5 days in Astana (I didn't like it), then I took a night train all the way to Almaty, where I stayed for almost a week. There are plenty of things to do around. Many day trips to beautiful places. Safe. Relatively cheap. I really liked it in Almaty.

I adored Kazakhstan. I was there only for 4 days, so I didn't see much. I organized private one-day trips to Charyn Canyon and the large Almaty Lake; the tours were quite expensive. Regarding safety, I felt absolutely safe, but I was told to avoid the areas around the Green Bazaar at night. The metro in Almaty works very well and is super cheap.
