Felt very unsafe in Marrakech, never again alone over there, while Essaouira, Chefchaouen, Fez and Agadir were absolutely gorgeous! I travelled alone by bus, I did not get out in the evening, ignored men and the catcalling, stayed very careful in the souk.

I loved Morocco and had no issues traveling solo. I wasn’t a fan of Casablanca (I was only there for one night for my flights), but I loved everywhere else. Lots of catcalling in the Medina in Marrakech but that’s part of the culture, there’s no expectation to even acknowledge it and it’s fine to just keep walking. If you go onto a shop and they offer you tea, accept it - it’s a gesture of hospitality. The dress was more modern than I’d anticipated but I was glad to have packed clothing that was looser and conservative anyway. Take baby wipes with you and only drink bottled water. The call to prayer is beautiful. I stayed in riads everywhere except for my connections in Casablanca, and I treated myself to a full day at a hammam. Expense wise I thought it was pretty affordable but I didn’t spend a whole lot while I was roaming. My riads all included breakfast and an evening snack, so I just grabbed street food while I was out wandering. The tipping culture is very different from the US, and little kids will approach you and ask for change. Don’t do it, it’s a pickpocketing scheme. Not too much trouble finding English speakers but if you know a handful of French phrases it can be helpful. Overall the people were warm and friendly, the country is gorgeous and fascinating. It was life changing for me.

I stayed at the Mamounia and a local riad. Essaouira was great, Chefchaouen (photo ops at every turn), overnight at the desert (but I would go for a longer desert trip next time), Ait Ben Haddou. There wasn’t much to see in Casablanca but had to fly out from there. Wore loose long-sleeved, long skirt, scarf (to enter mosques).
