Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Zagreb is considered fairly safe for solo female travelers at night. It is a busy, metropolitan city with a vibrant nightlife, which often means there is regular police presence and adequately lit streets, especially in populated areas and popular tourist sites. Of course, one should always apply basic safety precautions such as avoiding secluded areas, not flashing valuable possessions, and informing someone trustworthy about your whereabouts. But generally, Zagreb provides a safe environment and the locals are very friendly and helpful in case you need assistance.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Zagreb generally is quite safe. The city has a well-developed tram and bus system that is widely used by locals and tourists alike. The vehicles are generally clean and well-maintained. Drivers are professional and many speak at least basic English. Fares are very affordable, making it convenient for travelers. However, like any city around the world, you should still be vigilant against pickpockets, especially during peak hours and in crowded places. It's also wise to have a map or plan your routes in advance to prevent getting lost or stranded.

Street harassment:Low

Zagreb is generally a safe city for solo female travelers. Street harassment is relatively low compared to other cities. While much of how you are treated can depend on context, women can often travel around the city without attracting unwanted attention or experiencing harassment. However, as with any city, it's important to stay vigilant, especially in crowded areas. Local women are often out on their own day and night, which can be taken as a good indicator of the general safety level.

Petty crimes:Low

Zagreb, generally enjoys a reputation for safety with petty crimes such as pickpocketing or purse snatching being quite low. Various measures have been put in place to ensure visitor safety, making it a relatively safe city for female solo travelers. However, like any other major city, it always pays to exercise common vigilance especially in crowded places and while using public transport.

Tap water:Safe

In Zagreb, tap water is generally considered safe for drinking. It is treated and tested under strict regulations to meet high safety standards. However, some travelers with sensitive stomachs might prefer to opt for bottled water.

Solo travel experience

My first solo trip was to Zagreb. The city is very walkable and clean, and everything touristy is within a short distance. It has a great choice of museums, from the Chocolate Museum to the Museum of Broken Relationships (which turned out to be my favorite). Also stunning architecture. As a woman traveling alone, I felt very safe.

Solo travel experience

Zagreb is underrated, it's not focused on tourism and it's really worth visiting. During my stay, I did a really interesting walk, the food was affordable and delicious, and I felt very safe. Last year, I traveled solo through Croatia for 2 weeks.

Solo travel experience

I was in zagreb for 2 days. It was pretty and there's a selection of things to do. If you like cats, there's a cat caffee (reasonably priced), a zoo and plenty of parks. Sadly a lot of the architectural buildings are being renovated and have been for 3 years but they are still nice to go see just a lot of scaffolding. There's an amazing food place called Kaptolska Klet the staff are wonderful :))

Solo travel experience

People often say that they didn't like Zagreb, but I personally enjoy this city. It is quite different from the coastal areas, but I still recommend spending a whole day and night there. I also noticed that the prices in Zagreb are much more affordable compared to the coast.
