Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Vilnius generally boasts a secure and welcoming environment even during the nighttime. The culture is highly respectful towards women, and instances of serious crime are relatively low. However, like any city around the world, it's advisable to stay vigilant about your surroundings, especially if you are exploring quieter, less crowded areas. Avoid poorly lit streets and be cautious when meeting new people. Opt for a reputable, licensed taxi service if you're returning late from bars or clubs.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Vilnius is generally safe for solo female travelers. The city has a well-connected network of buses, trolley-buses, and trains that are frequently used by locals and tourists alike. They are well-maintained, clean, reliable and usually run on time. However, like any city, it's important to be mindful of your surroundings, especially during night hours and in less crowded vehicles. But overall, public transportation is a safe option in Vilnius.

Street harassment:Low

Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania, is generally a safe city for solo female travelers. There have been a few isolated cases of street harassment but these are not the norm and should not deter you from enjoying the city. Local people are usually friendly, respectful and helpful towards tourists. It is advisable to stay alert and aware of your surroundings, avoid less crowded areas late at night, especially if they are not well-lit.

Petty crimes:Low

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, has managed to maintain a relatively low rate of petty crime. While incidents such as pickpocketing, purse snatching, and other forms of theft can occasionally occur, particularly in crowded places or tourist-heavy areas, they are not widespread. As a solo female traveler, maintaining the usual level of vigilance and care you would in any city - such as keeping your belongings secure and being aware of your surroundings - should generally suffice to keep you safe from petty crime.

Tap water:Very safe

In Vilnius, the tap water is generally very safe to drink. The quality of water is continuously monitored by the relevant authorities and is well within European Union standards. However, taste can vary depending on the part of the city, but this does not affect its safety. As a traveler, you should feel confident in directly drinking from the tap.

Vilnius is safe. People mind their own business, they don’t bother you. Rarely there might be some drunk people late in the evening. Maybe avoid train station after 10pm. Overall I find it safe, never been harassed in 3 years living here. Stick to the main streets in the center/old town during evening time.

Vilnius is a quite safe city, especially in the city centre. Personally I never had any incidents (I live here for 9 years). Sometimes there’s some catcalling from the cars during day, sometimes drunk guys try to flirt, but usually people back off if you strictly tell them that you’re not interested. I don’t feel particularly safe jogging or skateboarding alone at night, so I try to stay in places that are well lit and stay on main streets. But other from that I feel quite safe in my city and still go out alone in the nighttime. Keep in mind that I’m talking about city centre, since I always lived there. You should be a little more careful around station (train and bus stations are nearby eachother). There’s not a lot of pickpocketing and mugging in Vilnius, but nonetheless remember to take care of your belonings.

Vilnius is a really safe place when it comes to visiting main touristy sites, especially in the old town. I’d say that areas a bit further from city center have their minuses, as the possibility to meet drunk people during the night is higher. Overall it’s a really safe city, pickpockets aren’t common, you don’t really have to guard your belongings every possible minute, but, as every traveler should consider, be aware of your surroundings and avoid shady neighborhoods during the night.

Vilnius depends on areas of the city - is still pretty friendly and safe city to live in or have vacation. City center is pretty safe as well as campuses. Public transport is also safe I would say, I never worry when I travel by it late. It is a multi cultural city but I feel pretty good as a female in a big city

Vilnius is always great 🫶 I adore this city and it’s really worth visiting during any season. Great people, nice traditional cuisine and Old Town makes you go back in time. Every time I leave, I immediately want to go back :) There are many options for exploring the city and the country itself, for shopping, activities and anything you like during trips.

Solo travel experience

I only spent two days there. At the MO Museum at that time, there was a contemporary art exhibition about Vilnius, which gave me some idea of what artists think about this place. I saw Literacka Street, Zarzecze (an alternative state, which even has its own charming constitution) and as for cafes, I recommend Elska Coffee.
