Is Tunisia Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Tunisia is generally safe but demands a certain level of caution. Solo female travelers should adhere to cultural norms and dress conservatively to avoid unwanted attention. While locals are usually friendly, instances of harassment have been reported. It is advisable to rely on private transport and avoid isolated areas especially during the night.

Safety index

Safety at night:Unsafe

Tunisia can present safety concerns for solo female travelers especially at night. Unwanted attention can be an issue, and there may be areas where it isn't recommended to wander alone. Even in tourist areas, it's advisable to take a taxi or use a reliable ride-hailing app rather than walk after dusk. Evidently, always trust your instincts, be aware of your surroundings, and prioritize your safety.

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Tunisia is relatively reliable, and it is a frequently used means of travel for locals and tourists. Buses, shared taxis or 'Louages', and the Metro in Tunis offer a cost-effective and relatively efficient way to get around. However, it can be crowded and you should stay vigilant of your belongings at all times, as pick-pocketing can occur. Be careful when traveling late at night and try to avoid isolated areas. As a solo female traveler, it is advisable to sit next to other women or families for an added level of comfort and security.

Street harassment:Moderate

In Tunisia, street harassment is a concern that female travelers might encounter. Though it heavily depends on the area, whistling and catcalls are experienced by some women, especially in crowded, urban areas. However, acts of physical harassment are extremely rare and occur less frequently. It's important to dress conservatively and to respect local customs and traditions to decrease the likelihood of such instances. Yet, always be alert and cautious, just like anywhere else in the world.

Petty crimes:Moderate

In Tunisia, petty crimes such as pickpocketing or bag-snatching are relatively common, especially in tourist-heavy areas and crowded marketplaces. Always remain aware of your surroundings and your belongings. Never leave your belongings unattended. Do not display large amounts of cash or flashy jewellery in public. It's also a good idea to keep your personal documents and valuables in an inside pocket or in a secure place where they cannot be easily reached. Be cautious when using public transportation and taxis as these are places where opportunistic thefts can occur.

Tap water:Unsafe

While the tap water in Tunisia is treated and should theoretically be safe to drink, most locals and tourists alike opt for bottled water. This is due to varying water quality across the country and potential differences in the bacteria and minerals present, which can lead to stomach issues. When travelling, particularly as a solo female, it can be best to play it safe and stick to bottled water.

Solo travel experience

I've been to Tunisia twice on my own and I traveled around by taxi. I felt safe. I got some silly pick-up lines from teenagers on the beach, but a firm refusal was enough to fend them off.

Solo travel experience

When I walked alone on the beaches, guys would approach me, either wanting to chat, take a photo, or straight up propositioning sex but I didn't feel in danger. I was more discouraged by the fact that it was the same thing over and over again and it was hard to fend them off. Apart from that had a great time in Tunisia.

Solo travel experience

I spent a weekend alone in Tunisia and I visited Tunis, Sidi Bou Said, Testour, and Dougga and had a great time. I stayed in an Airbnb with a local family, and an experienced guide helped me navigate the cities and surroundings. I always felt safe. The people were so nice. It's a pity I couldn't stay there longer.

Group travel experience

I recently returned from Tunisia and it was fantastic. I feel that it is safer there and slightly more developed than in Egypt. In Tunis, I recommend visiting Medina, Carthage, and Sidi Bou Said, which are spectacular. Hammamet has beautiful beaches. In Sousse, the Medina is nice, and the Dar Essid museum is really worth a visit. In Monastir, I visited the Medina and Riad. I also went on a two-day desert tour, which was the best decision. I visited the impressive El Jem, Berber houses in Matmata, Douz at the gates of the Sahara, and the amazing oasis Chebika. The food is amazing, the people are very friendly and you can travel by taxi. Everything is negotiable. The rule is that you can cut the initial price in half and start from there. I love their culture, history, and heritage and highly recommend a visit.

Solo travel experience

My first solo trip took place to continental Tunisia. During the day, I walked alone, and in the evenings I spent time with the people I met there. I landed at night and was taken to a hotel by some bus, completely alone. Honestly, I wasn't thinking too much about safety at that time. I covered the area from Monastir to Tunis and I was very comfortable with that.

Solo travel experience

I spent an incredible time in Tunisia during my solo weekend trip. I visited Tunis, Sidi Bou Said, Testour, and Dougga and it was amazing. I wish I could have stayed there longer, but I am glad I went. Staying with a local family on Airbnb and having an experienced guide showing me the area made the trip even better. Everyone was so friendly, and I felt safe all the time. Tunisia was even better than I expected.

Solo travel experience

I rented a car and spent 2 weeks alone in Tunisia - now it's one of my favourite countries. I drove from Tunis all the way south to Matmata and back north through Kairouan and Dougga. I never encountered any aggression and met several friendly, hospitable people along the way. The only place where I felt unsafe were the back alleys of Sfax.

It's really safe. The only time I felt like I was being gawked at was when I went to Medina. But it's a market. They see me, fair skin, and blonde hair, and of course a tourist...they think of selling. So the merchants were a bit intrusive... but nothing I couldn't handle before. Other than that. A beautiful country. Incredibly friendly and hospitable people. I loved spending time there and I can't wait to go back. Sidi Bou Said is a must-visit place, Medina is also very nice. I also visited Hammamet and I recommend seeing this place.

Solo travel experience

My solo trip to Tunisia was okay, but many of my tours got cancelled. I'm hoping to go again and have a better experience. The pirate ship was fun, and the hotel staff were amazing. I would like to see more of Tunisia. I plan on visiting again in November 2023.

Favorite trip Ive taken, went with an organized tour. So much to see and do, fantastic food. Extremely inexpensive. The people are very nice and helpful, in my experience. Did get playful comments on my appearance but no harrassment or catcalling. Would suggest going with an organized tour if you want to see the whole country as I dont think they have great tourist infrastructure (when compared to Morocco and Egypt for example)
