Safety index

Safety at night:Moderate

Tirana, as the capital of Albania, has seen significant improvements in terms of safety over the years. Nightlife can be vibrant and generally safe in central areas bar few incidents of pickpocketing. However, it's always prudent to stay attentive, avoid secluded alleyways, or less crowded areas late at night. Public transport may not be reliable post-midnight and is preferential to use a reputed taxi service if you need to get around. As in many cities, practicing common sense and following standard safety practices, like not flashing valuables, can enhance your safety.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Tirana is generally safe and reliable. Buses are the common form of transportation and they are quite comfortable. Security issues are relatively low, however, it's always important to stay vigilant, watch for pickpockets, especially in crowded buses. The signs and timetables might not be in English, so it's advisable to understand basic phrases in local language or use a translation app. Despite this, local people are usually willing to help if asked. Public taxis are also readily available and considered safe – though ensure they are licensed and metered before commencing your trip.

Street harassment:Low

Tirana, generally has a low level of street harassment. Male attention and unsolicited comments can occur but are not the norm and tend not to go beyond stares or occasional comments. It is always important to be aware of your surroundings and take common-sense precautions when exploring the city.

Petty crimes:Low

Tirana is generally a safe city to visit. While instances of petty crimes like pickpocketing and purse snatching have been reported in crowded areas, they are not significantly high. As always, it's crucial to stay vigilant, especially in crowded places like markets or public transportation. Nevertheless, most visitors have a pleasant and trouble-free stay in remark of safety.

Tap water:Moderate

Tap water in Tirana is generally safe to use for things like brushing your teeth or bathing, but it is recommended to drink bottled or filtered water. While localized sources may be improved, the water's taste can be off due to chlorine used for disinfection. Therefore, it's safer and wiser to opt for bottled water for consumption to avoid any potential health issues.

Solo travel experience

I was a bit intimidated to go to Albania because people told me it was not safe, but I’m so glad I went anyway! Tirana was the first spot I ever solo travelled and I fell in love! It’s a really fascinating city and the people are so nice and happy to have you there as a tourist! I stayed at the Milingona City Center Hostel and loved it! Very pretty and chill! I walked to and from there at night and early morning alone and always felt safe!

Solo travel experience

Tirana is really safe for women traveling alone. I can recommend different views points (pyramid, clock Tower, cable car), to visit the BunkArt to learn more about Albanian political history, to hang out in Blloku and to walk around the Tirana park and its lake!

Solo travel experience

Tirana is one of the most amazing cities I have visited. Clean, safe, colorful and charming. The people I met there were some of the most hospitable people I have met during my travels. Moreover, the city is very cheap. I highly recommend visiting.

Things to do: List of places I've visited and recommend seeing: - Skanderbeg Square - Et’hema Bey Mosque - National Historical Museum - Bunk'art - Kalaja e Tiranes Food: Albanian food is fantastic, if you love meat. Safety: Tirana is very safe. I never felt that I was in danger. Accommodation: I stayed at the Trip'n'hostel and met some great people. The place was not near the bus station, but close to everything else. Recommendations: Learn a few basic words, Albanian is a very difficult language to master, but locals really appreciate it if you can say a few words in Albanian.
