Is Puerto Rico Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Puerto Rico is generally safe for solo female travelers. The island has a friendly culture, and the locals are usually very helpful and welcoming. The tourist areas, where many amenities and attractions are located, are especially secure. However, like any other destination, it's recommended to take standard safety precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, avoid isolated areas, especially at night, and always keep your belongings secure.

Safety index

Safety at night:Moderate

Puerto Rico can be reasonably safe provided precautions are taken. This Caribbean island is tourist-friendly, and locals are generally welcoming. However, safety levels may vary based on the area and time of night. Some urban areas like Old San Juan or Condado might be safer due to their high tourist activity, whereas quieter, less frequented areas can have increased safety risks after dark. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid isolated areas and stay in well-lit, populated sectors. Moreover, always trust your instincts, avoid displaying expensive belongings, use reliable transportation, and be aware of your surroundings. Lastly, isolating yourself as a female traveler at night may not be the best option, hence moving in groups is recommended when venturing out after dusk.

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Puerto Rico is generally reliable and safe, especially during daylight hours. The main modes of public transportation are buses, the Urban Train (Tren Urbano), and taxis. The buses and train are well-maintained and the routes cover most of the major tourist areas. However, service can be infrequent and unpredictable due to traffic or route diversions. Taxis are a more convenient but pricier option. Always stay alert and be aware of your surroundings, particularly after dark.

Street harassment:Low

While Puerto Rico is generally welcoming and respectful towards female tourists, occasional incidents can occur. Always stay alert and aware of your surroundings. While catcalling can sometimes occur, most locals are friendly and helpful. Still, it's recommended to ignore any unwelcome approaches and continue on your way.

Petty crimes:Moderate

Puerto Rico is generally safe but petty crimes like pickpocketing and purse snatching do occur, particularly in busy tourist areas and crowded places. Being vigilant about your belongings and avoiding flashy displays of wealth can significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming a target.

Tap water:Safe

The tap water in Puerto Rico is generally considered safe to drink as it is supplied by the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) and they adhere to quality standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. However, there might be some incidents of inconsistency, so if you have a sensitive stomach, it's better to opt for bottled water. Always use your discretion and observe the local's water-drinking habits.

Couple travel experience

I loved Puerto Rico and hope to return one day. I stayed on the Condado and found that lodging is very affordable in this area, however, food can be a little spendy in my opinion (especially for the quality). I never felt unsafe for my entire trip and even felt safe combing the little beach area at night. I absolutely loved sitting by the lagoon in the evening and by the ocean at sunrise. I really enjoyed taking a day trip to El Yunque and another day trip to Luquillo. The beach in Luquillo was beautiful and had plenty of amenities with a variety of food and beverages. Despite all the attractions, the beach was still absolutely serine and peaceful. I ate an empanada that I still think about almost a month later. The flakiness was to die for.

Group travel experience

My trip to Puerto Rico last December was mostly fantastic, but I’ve got some tips to share. It’s generally safe for solo travelers, except for Old San Juan (OSJ) at night. I wouldn’t recommend women going out alone there after dark due to some incidents. The abundance of bars can make things a bit risky. Safety first! Now, let’s talk food. Prices in Puerto Rico, especially in OSJ, are more like New York – not the cheapest. The food? Well, it’s decent, not mind-blowing. However, don’t leave without trying the local gem – the pina colada. It’s a must! Venturing to Vieques Island is an awesome choice. Try horse riding and explore the Black Sand Beach – totally worth it. Quick tip: calling an Uber there is a challenge. Either drive yourself or rely on local drivers to explore the cool spots. Happy travels!

Solo travel experience

I traveled alone to Puerto Rico and it was wonderful. I did not rent a car. I stayed in a hostel and used Uber or walked everywhere. Uber was cheap. I went to El Yunque, which was a 45-minute journey organized by the hostel. I felt safe both during the day and at night.

Solo travel experience

I traveled alone to Puerto Rico for a month. I lived in Old San Juan. I always felt safe. I walked / rode a scooter / used Uber alone and it was always absolutely fine. Men were surprisingly respectful.

Solo travel experience

I spent two weeks in Puerto Rico. For ten days I lived in San Juan on Calle Loiza, five minutes walk from Playa Ocean Park, and I spent four days in Rincon. I felt very safe in both places at any time, also after dark. My only regret is that I didn't spend more time on the west side of the island, because I got the impression that there are better beaches there, and I'm not a party type. Nonetheless, San Juan has great food, history, architecture, and beaches. I also kayaked in Condado Bay at night, which was an incredible fun.

Family travel experience

I was there for 10 days in May. I adored Old San Juan and the atmosphere of the city. I didn't feel unsafe, even though I traveled with my sister. We took a ferry to Vieques, swam with a snorkel and spent a few nights there. I plan to return there someday, as there are many things to do and see!

Solo travel experience

I went alone to Puerto Rico and felt completely safe. I stayed in Santurce (I'm not sure if I spelled that right, but it's close). It's a bedroom town in San Juan. I felt completely safe the whole time. I went on a tour of Old San Juan, and our guide there was an architect. I learned so much and visited many wonderful buildings. However, I couldn't take advantage of their ocean tours due to high wave warnings.

Solo travel experience

Puerto Rico is amazing. It was my first solo trip and I 100% recommend it. Though English is not the main language, most people speak it practically fluently or understand enough to help, especially in tourist places. It's not very expensive, but not as cheap as I presumed, prices were usually only a little cheaper than where I live (NJ) in San Juan. I never felt in danger anywhere on the island, and the locals are some of the friendliest people I have ever met.

Solo travel experience

I really love Puerto Rico. I always tell people, rent a car and explore all parts of the island; beyond San Juan and the resorts (although Old/San Juan has its own charm!) there is much to do. The Caribbean part of the coast is also lovely! The locals are nice and helpful, there is culture and history, the food is delicious, and for solo travelers it is safe.

Old San Juan is amazing. It's a place you absolutely have to see. I stayed in Condado and went to incredible waterfalls and beaches. There is an amazing lighthouse, Arecibo, and a beautiful waterfall in Gozalandia. Crashboat Beach is wonderful. I loved the atmosphere, people, culture, and food.

Solo travel experience

I traveled alone to Puerto Rico and it was great. I did not encounter any aggression from men there and had no problems. Uber worked perfectly and was my main means of transport. I stayed in a charming hotel in San Juan, which was not close to anything other than the beach, but that was okay. It would be nice to stay in Old San Juan, but I did not want to pay extra for that convenience.
