Although Naples may be regarded as grittier, I felt generally safe during my stay. My friends and I, 6 of us all women, were able to walk around the streets at night with the usual precautions one would take anywhere.

I went to Napoli towards the end of 2021 for about 10 days. I stayed in an airbnb (not shared) in the Spanish Quarter, an airbnb (not shared) in Chiaia, and a hotel in Chiaia. The airbnbs were huge and super nice, but cheap (around $90/night). Chiaia is a nice neighborhood to stay in. It’s a more affluent place with nice views and restaurants. The Spanish Quarter was ok. It’s cheaper, but kind of sketchy at night. I never felt unsafe in Naples, but I have a higher tolerance for unsafe places. Maybe someone that is more fearful wouldn’t have done as much nighttime walking as I did. Naples is the home of Neapolitan pizza. I had a pizza at least once a day. LOL. It’s cheap and good. I wouldn’t say that the people are friendly. They mind their own business. Not interested in foreign people the way locals are in other countries. Very few people speak English, educated or not. Naples is a place that I’d recommend dating apps to get some social interaction. I didn’t find nightlife to be very interactive: people only interacted with the people they came with. I speak very basic Italian. Also, for POC, I’m a dark skinned, black woman. There was some staring, but nothing that made me uncomfortable.
Posted: January 20, 2024I loved Naples. I spent an incredible time there as a young woman traveling alone in July. I stayed in the Old Town and never once felt unsafe there. Everyone I came into contact with was very kind and hospitable. It was one of my favorite places I visited in Italy. I highly recommend visiting the National Archaeological Museum and the Sansevero Chapel to see the Veiled Christ. I also took a guided tour from Naples to Pompeii and loved every second of this experience. I also recommend wearing a purse with a strap over your shoulder to avoid potential pickpockets.
Posted: December 3, 2023I was there last April as a solo traveler and frankly speaking, I didn't like Naples at all. I was depressed all the time. However, I must admit that Naples has the best food among all the places I visited in Italy (Florence, Rome, Amalfi, Venice) - the pizza is simply out of this world. But the atmosphere did not suit me. It's really dirty there, full of graffiti, and I didn't feel safe walking at night as a solo traveler.
Posted: September 18, 2023I went to Naples on a one-day trip from Rome and generally I felt safe, especially on crowded streets and near tourist attractions. The only time when I personally felt unsafe during the day was when I walked through several quiet, narrow streets. I didn't feel safe walking as a woman alone at night, so I spent the last few hours of the day at the train station to avoid moving around the city at night.
Posted: July 31, 2023I went to Naples last year with my boyfriend during our trip around Italy. Out of all the places we visited, I definitely felt the most unsafe in Naples. I would not travel there alone. I advise against staying around the train station, where I felt the most unsafe. The city was definitely worth visiting, even if it was just for the pizza.
Posted: July 30, 2023I highly recommend Naples. It was very inexpensive, I stayed in a charming Airbnb that was in the heart of the old town (4 nights there cost as much as one night in Rome), and there are many interesting things to do there. I was undecided about going there, because everyone said it was dirty and dangerous, but I absolutely didn't feel that way.
Posted: July 19, 2023Naples is the only place I have visited in Europe that I wouldn't return to. I felt very unsafe there, walking around and using public transportation. It's not a very clean city (trash everywhere on the streets).
Posted: July 14, 2023I was there only for 2 days (one day was a trip to Pompeii and Vesuvius) and honestly, there is nothing that would make me want to return. It was dirty, dog poop everywhere, and I felt unsafe. I wanted to go to the ATM, but as soon as I stepped outside, I said "no" and went back inside.
Posted: July 12, 2023I went to Naples alone for a week and felt very safe walking around the city. I went to a bar in the evening and met some lovely people, but they walked me home, claiming that it is not safe for a lone woman to walk around at 2/3 in the morning.

I spent several nights in Naples and traveled to Sorrento and Positano for day trips by train. During the day in Naples, I felt fine, but I definitely did not enjoy walking at night or traveling by train at night due to whistles from men and crowds on the night trains.

By far one of my favorite places. I feel like I belong here. Napoli has my heart. I stayed in centro storico the historic center of Naples , mount Vesuvius was 15 minutes away. What a beautiful walk to see the volcano and the beach . Naples is old and mysterious. The people are kind and wonderful. I met friends I’ll have for a life time. All the beautiful islands are a ferry away. Capri ischia and procida are quite a few that I have visited and are a must to spend time at.
