Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Madrid is considered a secure city for solo female travelers. The city's main areas and public transportation services are generally safe at night. However, like any other bustling city, it is advisable to stay aware of your surroundings, avoid isolated areas and keep personal belongings secure. Local authorities are usually vigilant and responsive. As in most places, pickpocketing can be a concern, hence prudence is necessary.

Public transportation:Safe

Madrid's public transportation system is generally safe, modern, and efficient. Requests for help are usually met with friendly assistance and it's perfectly fine to use at all hours. It includes the metro, buses, and taxis. However, like any big city, it's advised to stay alert for pickpockets especially in crowded areas or during peak hours.

Street harassment:Low

While Madrid, like any large city, is not completely free from street harassment, many solo female travelers find it generally safe in terms of day-to-day interactions. There might be occasional catcalling or unsolicited attention, particularly in crowded and tourist-frequented areas, but most women report feeling comfortable walking around the city both during the day and at night. That said, it's important to stay vigilant, aware of your surroundings, and follow the same precautions you would in any major city.

Petty crimes:Moderate

Madrid’s vibrant capital, has a moderate level of petty crime. Pickpocketing, purse snatching, and theft from unattended vehicles or hotel rooms are the most common crimes. The city's bustling tourist spots and public transportation are especially targeted. Therefore, always remain vigilant, secure your belongings, and avoid flaunting valuable items in public.

Tap water:Very safe

In Madrid, the tap water is very safe for consumption. It meets all the sanitary standards required for drinking water quality. It originates from different sources including reservoirs and rivers which go through an extensive purification process. Therefore, you can unhesitatingly drink tap water in Madrid and even use it for cooking.

Solo travel experience

I stayed in a hostel in the city center in a room of all women, and felt safe in the hostel. I was hesitant to be out alone at night (past 11), which I think is normal for a big city. Looked on maps for food and activities- super last minute, and had a lot of fun. Spaniards seem generally open and happy to talk. I do speak a bit of Spanish and was happy to meet new people spontaneously.

I went to Madrid alone. It's safe. I learned a few phrases in Spanish, which helped me a lot. The city center is wonderful. I stayed in a hostel. It was cheap and clean, and moreover right in the center. I liked it.

I was there alone for two nights (I was a little worried about safety), but I never felt in danger or anything like that. Even riding the subway alone was safe, even in the evening. I don't speak Spanish and I didn't encounter any problems. Staying in the city center was definitely a great idea, because everything was much closer and I didn't need to walk/ride the subway when I was coming back home. Trains were also not expensive, I took Renfe to Valencia and it seemed a reasonable price to me.

I have been to Madrid twice. It's a very safe and very fun city. Watch out for pickpockets, but the rest is very safe. There are many things to do and see. As for the language, there is no problem, because they try to communicate in English.

I went to Madrid and I felt very safe there. It's one of my favorite European cities. If you love shopping, Gran Vía is the place you must visit. I used a hop-on hop-off bus for sightseeing and visited Segovia. Retiro Park is also beautiful.

I loved Madrid! It is a super vibrant city with a lot to explore, I felt safe there, the people are really nice and the food is good :) Once you get to one of the central metro stations you can walk everywhere. The heat is intense during the summer but if you nap like the spanish do you’ll be ok ;)

I really enjoyed Madrid. It was safe, pleasant, interesting. So many cultural institutions, plus the food culture, plus the ability to walk around, plus value for money, plus good transport, plus a cool little botanical garden right in the city center. There was a lot to do.

Is very safe. Just be careful with pickpockets on the city center or the metro. But you can walk alone by day and night with zero issues. For women especially is safe it is very rare that you feel uncomfortable. I’ve never received street harassment or something similar.

Generally feel very safe, pickpockets do exist around crowded areas. Don't leave phone and wallets on tables outside where they can be grabbed by passerby's. There are certain areas where maybe it's not great to walk alone super.late into the night, but nightlife in Madrid is great and a lot of friendly people can be found out and about at almost all times.

Very safe during the day, you can be robbed easily in some areas and pickpockets are always around you even in the most touristic areas. But people are always super friendly and very respectful, always want to help you.

As in any other city there are good and bad neighborhoods, but if you come to visit Madrid for it’s tourist attractions (museums, architecture, restaurants,..) you don’t have to worry because it’s all in the center. The public transportation is safe and even if you lose your last metro train there are always night buses. I really recommend this city for solo travelers

Madrid’s biggest issue if pickpocketers. Almost no one will mug or attack you, unless you are loudly speaking English (or not Spanish) in more secluded areas at night. The biggest threat in Madrid is getting things stolen at clubs and bars.

Compared to other cities Madrid is moderately safe, you always have to be careful on public transport because you might encounter a pickpocket and I wouldn't recommend going out at night alone (just in case) but in general I have lived here all my life and nothing dangerous has ever happened to me, you just have to be a bit careful.

About Me

An avid traveller who appreciates good food and company. Other hobbies include cheerleading, reading webtoons, language learning and teaching. I've never hosted since I've never been in a position to, but would willingly if I can in the future! I have experience with Couchsurfing but it's difficult when most people I see on there are men (I think for obvious reasons). I solo travel a lot so I'm fine on my own but would be more than happy to spend time with others. I'm very neat and clean and grew up around animals so let's are no issue to me. All I can ask for is a safe and clean place to sleep and I will repay that kindness however I can!
