Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Germany, in general, has a high level of safety even at night. However, like any other urban areas in the world, some parts can be less secure than others. It's always prudent to stay aware of your surroundings, avoid less populated areas, and stick to well-lit lanes. German law enforcement is reliable and emergency services are responsive. Public transportation networks function well into the night and they are normally secure. If you're feeling uneasy, taxis are readily accessible and dependable.

Public transportation:Very safe

Public transportation in Germany is one of the safest, most efficient, and reliable in the world. Stations and vehicles are generally well-lit and security personnel are frequently present. Whether it's bus, tram, U-Bahn or S-Bahn, it is well-maintained and punctual. Especially in bigger cities like Berlin, Munich, or Hamburg, you can safely travel even at night. It is also common for women to travel alone. However, like anywhere, always maintain general safety awareness.

Street harassment:Low

Germany is generally a safe country for solo female travelers. The incidence of street harassment isn't commonplace, but it's always a good idea to stay alert just like you would in any other country. Most people uphold respect and personal space. Especially in urban areas, you can expect the majority of people to keep to themselves. However, be sure to familiarize yourself with the local customs and observe the behaviors and actions of the locals so you can navigate through the streets safely.

Petty crimes:Low

Germany is generally a safe country with a strong law enforcement presence. Petty crimes like pickpocketing or purse snatching are relatively low compared to other European countries. However, like any major city around the world, they can occur in crowded areas, tourist hotspots, or public transportation. So, while the risk isn't high, it's important to always stay vigilant and keep a close watch on your belongings.

Tap water:Very safe

German tap water is considered superior in quality and safe to drink. Across the country, tap water passes stringent quality controls, often surpassing international standards. It’s often filtered from a natural source and must adhere to EU Drinking Water Directive regulations. Always make sure to ask if it’s safe in a region or if it’s customary to order a glass of water in a restaurant. However, you can generally rely on German homes, hotels, and eateries to provide potable tap water.

I've travelled a lot in my life, and felt welcomed at many places, but Germany is one of those places that make me feel welcomed the most. Of course, it is necessary to keep your common sense and be aware of strangers (because dangerous people are everywhere), but most of people you meet is very nice. As for the transportation, you can buy a monthly ticket called Deutschlandtricket. It costs €49 and applies on all types of public transport, except long-distance transport (ICE, EC or AG trains). It provides you of unlimited amount of travels, which can save you a lot of money! Food is of great quality (comparing to eastern Europe).

Safe, friendly people and clean..I really enjoyed travelling there.. I have a few different opinions. Firstly most are always amazed by the Sky Scrapers firstly. As I am very centrally located I can walk to town - the easy distance between areas by train. Westend to town just 1 stop. Each area has its own different appeal. Bergersstrasse is full of restaurants, clothing stores and just friendly people. Leipzigerstrasse very busy and popular street more for grocery shopping with organic stores, health shops and clothing stores, surrounded by different restaurants in the area as well. I think the food most surprises people. The dull greens and potatoes you think you will find on every corner surprisingly is filled with different experiences throughout the city, from amazing sushi, doner / falafel to indian, fresh and vegan. Germans are very into vegan. Most restaurants have at least one vegan meal on their menu. So food is a definite YES!!! Frankfurt is not your typical city in Europe as it was bombed during the war and most of those beautiful building are surrounded by newer versions so you don't feel like you walking down history lane, or the same feeling as you get in Paris by the architecture from before WWII.

I felt safe I recommend visiting not only one city Transport was easy to access, and the cities were walkable. I stayed in guest houses which were amazing, it felt like home at Lotte- The backpackers in Heidelberg. I am persco-vegetarian and it was easy for me to find options without meat. The overall trip was affordable.

Solo travel experience

I traveled alone to Germany and felt safe and comfortable. I walked by myself, got lost, and everyone was wonderful and helpful. I got lost in Munich at 3 in the morning, returning to my hotel from a food and beer tour, and I felt safer going back there than walking around many cities in my home country.

Group travel experience

Itinerary: I loved the city of cologne, I went to the cathedral, I ate that traditional food made with delicious pork and cabbage. I stayed there for 5 days❤️ Things to do: I visited the cathedral, the bay where the chocolate museum is located, and the pubs with the best beers Safety: Super safe, I didn't feel unsafe at any time Budget: I didn't find it expensive, just the water I paid 5€ for a 500 ml bottle loool But otherwise it was more or less the same price as Lisbon. Accommodation: We hooked up an Airbnb, it was about €50 per person, we were 8 people.

Is Germany safe for women?

Juli

Juli

Germany is a really safe country. Of course, there are still neighborhoods in some big cities, where I wouldn’t recommend going there by night on your own, but I think you should be aware of that in every place! Normally Germany is known as a really safe country, easy to travel, easy to get to know some open minded people!

The city’s and landscapes are pretty, but for all woman I would recommend to never be alone when it’s dark. Just be in a group or with people you really trust and feel safe around them. For the rest, enjoy Germany.

About me

I like to walk through cities and love to discover them. I'm interested in the architecture and the old and typical of a country... I also like to just enjoy the peace and quiet, sit in a park or by the water and sometimes I want to try things that are full of action, it could be a turbo slide or something completely new and crazy... I am also interested in natural cosmetics and healthy eating, but chocolate is a must every day...
