Is Fez Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Fez offers a vibrant history and culture, but as a solo female traveler, you should always be aware of your surroundings. While serious crime is uncommon, petty crime like pickpocketing can be frequent, especially in crowded markets. It's suggested to respect local customs and dress conservatively. Finally, staying alert, particularly at night would help ensure a safer experience.

Safety index

Safety at night:Moderate

Fez is generally safe, but like any city, it experiences occasional situations that demand caution. After dark, it's advisable to stick to the main streets where it's well-lit and populated. Avoid empty alleys and quieter areas - this is especially true in the old city (Medina) which can be very confusing. Always stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Using a reputable taxi service is a good idea when traveling at night. However, most Moroccans you'll meet are friendly and welcoming, so do not hesitate to ask for help if necessary.

Public transportation:Moderate

Fez public transportation is generally safe for solo female travelers. Buses and taxis are the main types of public transport. Taxis are widely used, but it's best to ensure that the driver uses the meter to avoid overcharging. Buses are quite crowded, and pickpocketing can occur, so it's best to keep a close eye on your belongings. In the evening, it's better to use a taxi for safer transportation. Overall, exercising common precautions can ensure a safe travel experience.

Street harassment:Moderate

Fez, like any city in Morocco, may present an element of street harassment. As a solo female traveler, expect a degree of attention, particularly in busy public areas, markets, or late in the evening. This often manifests in the form of comments, hissing, or staring. These behaviors are generally non-aggressive and ignoring them is usually an effective strategy. Always make sure to dress respectfully according to local norms to minimize unwanted attention.

Petty crimes:Moderate

Fez, the second largest city of Morocco, generally has a moderate level of petty crimes such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, especially in crowded markets and touristic areas. It would be wise to exercise extra caution in these areas and avoid flashing expensive belongings to keep risk at minimum.

Tap water:Unsafe

In Fez, it's generally advised to avoid drinking tap water directly. This is due to differing standards of water treatment compared to what one may be accustomed to. The local population may be used to the water, but travelers could potentially experience stomach issues. Thus, it's often recommended to drink bottled water or properly purified water when in Fez.

Solo travel experience

I was in Fez last summer and it was amazing. The city is not that big and is basically divided into the "new city" and the medina ("old city"). I recommend staying in a Riad just outside the medina so you can walk around and explore. Generally speaking, I found it to be very safe. I only used taxis (really cheap) to get from the medina to the new city and vice versa. I also took a one-day bus trip to Chefchaouen and that was great too.

Group travel experience

I definitely do not recommend traveling to Fes for a woman traveling alone. My friends and I (two of us) were harassed by the souks and we got lost because there was no signal to find our way back. We did not feel safe there at all.
