I went to Edinburgh with another woman around my age and we had a great time! Our airbnb was located about 30 minutes from the Royal Mile, but with the public transportation, it was a quick and easy experience. Overall, we felt very safe. Edinburgh is a pretty small city that is very walkable. We went in July and there were definitely large crowds of tourists that made it hard to navigate around popular spots, but I was never a debilitating feature. Some of my restaurant recommendations include: - Nok’s Kitchen - Luckenbooth - Vittoria on the Bridge - Makar’s Mash Experience recommendations include - Edinburgh Castle - The Real Mary King’s Close - The Scotch Whisky Experience - Calton Hill Edinburgh is a beautiful medieval city with lots of charm, so I hope you enjoy your trip!
Posted: March 1, 2024I went solo to Edinburgh and loved how walkable the city is and how friendly, always felt very safe. The historical buildings are everywhere and beautiful. Bus system easy to use. Food and craft beer was great.
Posted: February 7, 2024Edinburgh is a small city so its really easy to walk everywhere, but there is also a tram. Its really safe and people are sooo friendly. It's a really vibrant city, and so so beautiful. I made a ton of friends and would love to come back.
Posted: January 24, 2024Experienced: October, 2023I traveled to Edinburgh, St. Andrews, and the Highlands of Scotland with my nearly 80 year old grandmother. She used a motorized wheelchair throughout the trip and while not all the streets were built for those scooters, the locals in each place were incredibly lovely and jumped in to help whenever I had to lift her scooter over curbs, onto buses, etc. I spent an evening wandering alone around the main part of the city of Edinburgh near the Royal Mile and felt completely safe. I also walked back from a bar to my hotel in St Andrews by myself well past midnight and felt totally comfortable. The people in each place we went were so friendly and welcoming. If you are able to, a tour of the Highlands is a must. The countryside is beautiful and worth spending a day exploring, and be sure to pet a Highland cow!
Posted: January 20, 2024Experienced: April, 2022In Edinburgh, I felt extremely safe. It was supposed to be my first solo trip, and I fell in love with the city. The Royal Mile is really beautiful, but there are nice little shops and cafes outside the street. There is a great selection of vegan options. By bus, you can quickly reach a nature park where sheep roam. You might also want to take a look at the castle. While prices in Edinburgh are somewhat higher, they are significantly more affordable compared to London. The people are all super friendly.
Posted: November 10, 2023I love Edinburgh. I've been there probably 5 times and I've always felt extremely safe. It's very pedestrian-friendly, has a great bus system and you can go on trips to the highlands if you don't want to drive a car.
Posted: October 1, 2023I went to Edinburgh by myself for the first time and I felt really safe there all the time. Everyone I talked to was really nice, and there were plenty of things to do. I was there in January, so it was getting dark already around 4:00 PM, but even then, when I was walking alone, I felt safe.
Posted: July 31, 2023I visited the castle, the place of illusions opposite. The National Museum, art gallery, cathedral, took part in a terrifying guided tour, and went to the zoo. All within walking distance, wandering around the gardens. I had an amazing time, I recommend all of it, and if you have time, it is also recommended to climb Arthur's Hill, unfortunately, I didn't have time for that. The cafes in these places are charming and less crowded than the main cafes and restaurants. I felt very safe walking around at night, I wandered around the city at midnight.
Posted: November 26, 2022To Do: - Dean Village - Calton Hill - Circus Lane - Victoria Street - Scott Monument - Armchair Books - Ross Fountain - Edinburgh Castle - Old Town - Writers' Museum Safety: I've always felt very safe. Recommendations: Edinburgh is great. It's one of my favourite cities.
Posted: September 23, 2022Things to do: - Victoria Street - Scott Monument - Calton Hill - Armchair Books Bookstore - Circus Lane Safety: Edinburgh is safe, but like in any city in the world, you should be cautious when walking alone at night. Recommendations: Edinburgh is my favorite city in the UK. It's extremely pedestrian-friendly with lots of hiking trails and picturesque spots around the city.

Fortunately, I’ve never been in any risk or danger at all. Everyone is very friendly and helpful, and I can always rely on strangers for support. The city is full of students and tourist, so it feels quite safe

Definitely feel very safe in this city!! Have had no problems walking around or uneasy situations/feelings. However, it is a city so you have to be cautious and use common sense. But I wouldn’t not walk around at night or not go to any certain areas. I’m also not from the area though.

Incredibly safe during the day, I’ve lived here for 7 years and have only had a couple of incidents of harassment and that has been while walking alone after dark. Obviously still take precautions when out and about, but overall this is a very safe city.

Edinburgh has great public transport options that help the area feel really safe as you're not often waiting long for transport. There are a number of parks in the city that I would maybe avoid in the dark due to not being well-lit but overall I think it feels like a really safe city.
Posted: April 17, 2024Iv lived here for quite a few years, to be precise I grew up (high school) in leith, Edinburgh and still live here. Iv had a few bad experiences however through my time here, iv noticed things have gotten worse, I feel less and less safe walking around Edinburgh alone. Harassment in my experience has become more prevalent especially in the city centre, I would recommend any solo traveling woman to be careful around “local pubs” especially! As drunk men are less safe and worse than the addicts around, in my experiences Also leith is definitely worth a visit! Just avoid walking alone though the parks late into the night ! Just grab a bus and you’ll be fine !
Posted: April 7, 2024Some areas are understandably just as in any city, no goes for visitors but all tourist areas are very safe and accessible. Buses and trams are easy to use and locals are friendly. Not many other languages than English widely spoken

Edinburgh is safe if you exercise some caution. Refrain from walking alone at night, specifically through the Meadows. But, on the whole, it’s a very safe city. It’s usually packed with students, or the Fringe in August. Visiting at these times makes it easier to keep around people and not be isolated.

I stayed at Castle Rock hostel and had an amazing time! They had events planned for each night so was really easy to meet other travellers that way. Spent my day wandering around the city - it was quite expensive I had a low budget to be fair, so ended up buying groceries and making myself food for the most part. It was really easy to just walk everything was really close. I visited: Arthur’s seat, national gallery and museum, Dean village, and small parks and areas of the city that were very pretty!

I am in love with the city, the country side, the people, the food, the vibe, the weather, just beyond impressed with how kind the people are there, so much to do, never ending, get to the Royal mile, get a hostel around and you won’t run out of things to do, a lot of activities free, plenty of chances for good pictures, and of course plenty of pubs, I can’t wait to go back

Hi! I'm Jo. I'm 26, and a new traveler. I'm a bit of a nerd, I love Dungeons & Dragons, and board games. I love to meet new people and find new friends. I love discovering new coffee shops, pubs and pretty landscapes. I'm still a uni student doing a bachelor's and taking my sweet time at it. I love pets and all animals, fun fact I've ran infront of a truck to save a turtle on the drive back from my family's cabin once 😅 I love questions so if you have any! Ask away!
