Is Croatia Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Croatia is generally safe for solo female travelers offering a low crime rate. However, like anywhere, it's always important to stay vigilant, especially in crowded areas and at night. The locals are usually friendly and happy to help, but it's wise to avoid remote areas late at night. Basic precautions, such as using reputable transportation services, avoiding secluded places, and keeping your belongings secure will help ensure a stress-free visit.

Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Croatia is generally regarded as a safe destination, even for solo female travelers. Its cities are well-lit and typically bustling with people, even into the late evening hours, contributing to an overall feeling of security. However, as with any location, it's always recommended to remain alert and aware of your surroundings, especially when walking alone at night. It's advisable to stay in populated areas, avoid unfamiliar neighborhoods, and follow local guidelines and advice related to safety.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Croatia is fairly dependable and safe. The buses and trains are well-maintained and have reliable schedules. Tram service in larger cities such as Zagreb is comprehensive and convenient. Some areas, especially off the beaten path, may have less frequent services, but generally, incidents of crime or harassment on public transportation are relatively low. As long as you keep an eye on your belongings and stay alert to your surroundings, you should have a safe and comfortable journey.

Street harassment:Low

In Croatia, women often report feeling safe with very minimal experiences of street harassment. However, as in any other place, it's important to be aware of your surroundings and stay vigilant, particularly in larger cities or crowded areas.

Petty crimes:Low

Croatia is generally safe for travelers with petty crimes such as pickpocketing and purse snatching being less common than in many other European destinations. Nevertheless, it occurs occasionally, especially in crowded places like markets and public transport. It's always important to be vigilant, keeping your belongings secure, not displaying expensive items openly or leaving them unattended. Always use common sense when undertaking any activities and ensure personal safety.

Tap water:Safe

Tap water in Croatia is generally safe to drink. The water is clean and undergoes regular testing to ensure it meets health standards. However, the taste might be off-putting to some due to the chlorine used in purification. To have the best experience, you might still prefer bottled water or using a water filter for the taste. It is also worth noting that while the tap water is safe in most of the country, in some remote or island areas, locals might advise drinking bottled water instead.

Croatia is a great country, but there aren't many places to travel. You definitely need a map to avoid getting lost. I felt very safe in Croatia as the people were kind and helpful. The prices are at a normal level. Have fun!

Couple travel experience

I felt very safe, everyone is really pleasant. I recommend going island hopping. We did Hvar, Vis and Brac and it was so beautiful and amazing! Sometimes I found that hostels are even more pleasant than airbnbs. They have high scores, we stayed in two and were pleasantly surprised

Group travel experience

It was a great place. I always felt safe travelling with an all women group. The weather is insanely nice in the summer. Not too hot and overbearing. We stayed on an island nearby which was quite hard to get off from. The ferries were very irregular. So you had to make sure and ask locals whether they were actually going.

Croatia is an extremely safe place. I did a cruise around the coast, but the transportation in both split and Dubrovnik felt safe and convenient . Since Croatia adopted the euro, it did not feel as cheap as neighboring eastern European countries . The people are friendly, the seafood is really fresh, and the food portions are generally quite large. The weather in June it is extremely hot and I recommend positioning yourself near a beach as they are free to enter and extremely warm and clean.

Solo travel experience

Croatia is beautiful, rich in history and very safe, making it an ideal place for solo travel. I spent time in Dubrovnik, Pula, Zadar, Split and Sibenik. I definitely recommend all these cities, although Zadar and Sibenik were my favorites.

Solo travel experience

I visited Dubrovnik, Korčula, Hvar, Split, Zadar, and Trogir, which included renting a car in Split and driving to Krka National Park from Split, and then to Plitvice from Zadar. Croatia is absolutely beautiful and I felt completely safe there as a lone woman. I definitely recommend visiting if you haven't been there before.

Group travel experience

I went to Croatia with my friends last year, we visited Zadar and Split and it was beautiful, we had no problems, everyone was very open and kind when we asked for directions or food recommendations, most of the people we spoke to had a good understanding of English. We felt very safe walking around the area and the town at night. The only thing I would like to say is that the shops can be overpriced in tourist areas, so if you plan to do some shopping, it may be worth haggling over the price you would be happy to pay, which we managed to do.

Solo travel experience

Hey! So i was a solo traveler in croatia (split) this year and it was amazing. I stayed in a hostel, where for me is the best thing to meet people while traveling alone! I met a lot of people there, people really come to you to talk. The prices are correct, just in some activities it can be expensive sometimes. I felt safe there even at night when i was alone, really recommend you this country. If you want to visit some places in Split: the marjan hill, the kasjuni beach (this one you really have to go!!!), krkra and the hvar island is also nice even if you dont have a lot to do there (lot of beach) but the 2 last pictures i put were there and the water is just wow.

Solo travel experience

I considered Croatia to be very safe. I spent there 10 nights, landed in Zagreb, spent a few nights there, then took a bus to Split for a few nights (I loved it), then crossed to Hvar for a few days, and then flew back from Zadar. I traveled by buses and ferries between all the places.

Solo travel experience

I visited Dubrovnik, Hvar, and Split last year. Dubrovnik was my favorite. I started there, and then took a ferry to Hvar. From there, I took another ferry to Split and then took a Flixbus to Zadar. I found Dubrovnik to be much prettier than Split and, in general, it had a better atmosphere. Hvar was delightful and it was so nice to relax and swim there. I felt very safe there.

I went on the Best of Croatia: a Coastal Village tour with Road Scholar and it was phenomenal. A couple nights on land on either end of a seven-day small ship cruise with 16 passengers and 6 crew. They do have a single surcharge. But for a great educational, historical, and cultural experience where each stop was another World Heritage site, it couldn’t be beat. As is common with these trips, there were more women than men and the men were nearly all in couples. And people on the Road Scholar trips are generally intellectually curious and good company even for an extended trip. Road Scholar is for people over 50, so the participants do skew toward retirees.

Family travel experience

You Can find a cheap airbnb near the sera, and eat well (seafood mainly) in good restaurants for a reasonable amount of money. Back then, the flights were not so expensive, but I Heard it fends to be more expensive as the location is more popular. In terms of landscapes, Croatia is a must if tou like the sea but also the mountains. It's a poor country, there isn't big malls or things like that, even though the Big cities are beautiful. One advice: take your translator with you, not many people speak english
