Is Berlin Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Berlin is generally safe for solo female travelers. Violent crime is rare, locals are usually welcoming, and physical harassment is low. Regardless, it's important to remain vigilant, especially after dark. There is a good police presence and public transportation is usually safe at all times. However, some neighborhoods are considered less safe than others. Like in any other city, use common sense and take standard precautions like staying in well-lit areas, not disclosing you're traveling alone to strangers, and being wary if you consume alcohol.

Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Berlin generally has a high safety level. However, like in any major city, certain precautions should be taken, especially at night. Central areas and neighborhoods are typically well policed and lit. Public transportation runs around the clock and taxis are readily available. Nevertheless, sticking to well-traveled areas is advisable. Some areas might be less frequented late at night and it's always important to stay aware of the surroundings. Walking alone is generally safe but caution should always be exercised.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Berlin is widely used by locals and tourists due to its efficiency and comprehensive network. You can conveniently travel all across the city without feeling unsafe, even into the early hours of the morning. However, like any other large city, pickpocketing can be an issue so stay vigilant about your belongings and be cautious of your surroundings. Overall, Berlin's public transport can be considered safe for solo female travelers.

Street harassment:Low

Berlin, being a modern and liberal city, has relatively few issues of street harassment. Although incidences can occur, as they can anywhere, most of the areas that tourists frequent are safe and well patrolled. You may occasionally encounter some rude comments or unsolicited attention especially during the night. Still, residents are generally welcoming and respectful towards women. You can feel confident about navigating the city independently. Nonetheless, we advise using common sense and being aware of your surroundings in less crowded areas or later at night.

Petty crimes:Low

Berlin, as a global city, generally maintains a low rate of petty crimes. Although instances of theft and pickpocketing can occur, particularly in crowded areas and public transportation, they are not rampant. The locals are typically respectful and helpful to tourists. However, staying alert and aware of your surroundings is always recommended for any traveler.

Tap water:Very safe

Berlin's tap water undergoes rigorous quality checks and is perfectly fine to drink. It is sourced from multiple deep wells and is some of the most regulated in the world. You can confidently refill your bottle from any tap, save money and help to reduce plastic waste.

I enjoyed being in Berlin; I went for work, and honestly, I could enjoy its streets. However, in the hotel I stayed at, there was a spa, and I only used it once because apparently, it is normal in Germany for people to be naked in spas. Moreover, in my hotel's spa, clothing was prohibited, and you could only use the robe they provided. The food was normal; I am a vegetarian, so something that surprised me is that in ALL places, there was a vegetarian/vegan option. I felt safe at all times and went to explore the monuments.

I would definitely recommend Berlin. The a and o hostel at Berlin Mitte is good located, cheap and offers just woman rooms. I felt really safe there and had a lot of fun. Great bars, clubs and food sport around.

Solo travel experience

So, I just spent 3 nights in Berlin and out of a few of my solo trips to European cities (Dublin, Barcelona, Porto, Lisbon), I felt absolutely safest there. I loved how the city is connected through public transportation, I felt safe returning to the hostel after a night out, etc. I walked around the city, both during the day and at night, and I was never harassed. I even went out at night for the first time - scary, but so funny. I stayed at St Christopher's Inn hostel - personally, I found it quite basic for the price I paid (compared to other hostels where I stayed in other cities), but the location was ideal, and overall it wasn't bad.

When I went last year, I was often approached by passers-by and watched, even when I was in large groups with guys, both in tourist and non-tourist places. Generally, I felt safe because there were a lot of people around. Despite everything, I really had a good time.

It’s pretty safe, just some u bahn stations in the south of Neukolln and Leopoldplatz in wedding could be a bit unpleasant, sketchy. In some parks, like gorlitzer it could be sketchy near entrance/public bathrooms.

Berlin is relatively safe. Avoid obscure areas during night time and watch out for your valuables in public transportation and tourist hotspots. Go out of the way of drunkards and people on drug trips and you should be fine.

Just avoid some streets and areas in the suburbs or Neukölln/Kreuzberg and you totally feel safe. Otherwise use a taxi or Uber at night and you can enjoy the city to the fullest. There is nothing to be worried about it

I live in Berlin Neukölln where the police doesn't like to come because of the gangs and many people having weapons (but not showing them in public) wich feels pretty save to me because they protect each other better than the police could ever do. In the trains are often homeless people asking for money but the most dangerous thing about them is their smell sometimes. All in all we have access to biologically grown food in the supermarkets so we can even choose to have less harmefull chemicals on our food and have just the chemicals of our environment left wich I chose over those in the food

I think it's very safe in Berlin, there hasn't been a single situation where I was afraid something would happen to me. You can also travel to Berlin on your own without any problems. You can also book an Uber at any time without any problems. :)

being out at night in Berlin is really dependent on what area you find yourself in, in some particular areas it can be dangerous, in others in contrast you are fine, overall you need to be careful and avoid certain areas

I live here for more than 2 years, the city has its own nonwritten things and rhythm, but I feel safe here and I feel that all individuals around me feel safe too. No one minds taking transportation late at night or have a fear related to be out at night. Streets are fine and it’s a lively city, so you are surrounded. Awareness related to queer scene, as a result of the diversity, empathy towards all groups are high. Talking about the central parts through my experience!

Arriving in Berlin for language school, I wasn’t sure if I would get the most out of the city as a solo traveler. However, the city with its vibrant community and extensive sightseeing options always kept me interested for a whole month. I went to all the museums, chatted with many locals, and ate the best doner (outside Turkey of course).
