Safety index

Safety at night:Very safe

Bergen is a remarkably safe city to explore, even at night. Scandinavian countries are known for their high levels of safety and Bergen is no exception. The peaceful streets are generally well-lit and frequently patrolled by polite and helpful law enforcement officers, which provides a feeling of security. Public transport operates reliably until late hours and the locals are helpful. Petty crime rate is relatively low but as with any destination, it's always advised to take basic safety precautions. Crowded areas and tourist hotspots can be targets for pickpockets so maintain awareness of your belongings and surroundings, especially at night.

Public transportation:Very safe

Public transportation in Bergen is exceptionally efficient and safe. Security measures and staff presence are noticeable at all hours, including night times. Buses, trams, and ferries are on time, well-kept, and reliable. The locals are well mannered and helpful which also contributes to the feeling of safety. It extends to even low traffic times and less populated stops.

Street harassment:Low

In Bergen, you are unlikely to encounter high levels of street harassment. As with all locations, experiences can vary, but many solo female travelers report a relatively respectful and safe environment. This peaceful city prides itself on its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. However, remember that caution is always necessary, no matter how safe an area is considered to be.

Petty crimes:Low

Bergen tends to have a fairly low rate of petty crimes. You may encounter occasional pickpocketing or luggage thefts, particularly in crowded tourist hotspots and public transport. However, it is less common compared to other major global cities. Like always, you should remain vigilant with your belongings, especially when travelling alone and in high crowd areas. Overall, local authorities maintain effective control over safety, making it safe for solo female travelers.

Tap water:Very safe

Tap water in Bergen is perfectly safe and is of excellent quality. It's among the cleanest worldwide as it originates from deep mountain lakes and large reservoirs. Hence, you can feel confident drinking tap water, using it for food preparation or brushing your teeth.

I loved Bergen and felt very safe. I walked through Vidden, ate the most delicious seafood at an outdoor restaurant in the market, and then took a fjord cruise to Flam, returning to Bergen by train.

Bergen is so safe and beautiful. Bring good shoes for walking in the mountains and a raincoat. It is very easy at the airport in Bergen, as well as during transfers from Oslo. Everyone speaks English, and customs clearance is not as "scary" as in the USA.

I was in Bergen for a few days in July. I visited Ulriksbanen and the views were magnificent. There are options for traveling / walking up and descent / walking back down. I also participated in a kayak tour around nearby fjords for a day, which was a wonderful experience.
