Safety index

Safety at night:Moderate

Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, enjoys a relatively safe reputation in comparison to other European capitals. However, like any other city, it's advised to exercise caution when walking alone at night. Most areas are well-lit and populated, but there are certain less-visited neighborhoods that might be better to avoid. Public transport operates late and taxis are readily available. Locals are generally helpful and friendly, and instances of crime against tourists are rare, but it's still important to stay alert, especially during the night.

Public transportation:Safe

Belgrade's public transportation system is generally safe for solo female travelers. It is made up of a network of buses, trams and trolleys that are frequently used by locals and tourists alike. However, as in any large city, it's important to always be aware of your surroundings, especially during the night or in less crowded vehicles. Cases of pickpocketing can occur, but they are not common. Always keep your belongings secure and in your sight. There is usually a constant police presence which can be reassuring. Moreover, most locals are friendly and will be willing to help if you encounter any issues.

Street harassment:Low

Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, generally presents a safe environment for solo female travelers. The level of street harassment is relatively low. Locals are often friendly and willing to help. Nevertheless, like in any other city, it is advisable to maintain a level of caution, particularly during the night or in less crowded areas. Keep your belongings secure and stay in well-lit, busy areas, and you should mostly be fine. Ultimately, a confident demeanor can greatly help in deterring potential harassers.

Petty crimes:Low

Belgrade is generally safe with low petty crime levels. Tourists are often safe from bag snatching, pickpocketing, and theft, especially in well-trafficked areas. However, always stay vigilant and take basic security measures, such as not displaying valuables, securing bags and personal belongings, and avoiding deserted areas late at night.

Tap water:Very safe

The tap water in Belgrade, is known for its high level of purity and safety. It undergoes regular testing to ensure its cleanliness and adherence to health standards. There's no need to rely solely on bottled water while in this city. Drinking directly from the tap is considered very safe.

Group travel experience

We stayed in a airbnb which was really cozy and nice but had enormous stairs while being on the 5th floor. Belgrade is a very budget friendly city and is also quite beautiful. We were out in the night as a group of 4 girls and didn’t experience any problems except for one catcalling but we were right in the center so I don’t know about the rural areas. The nightlife there is very much alive so that’s another reason for how safe it is there are people around at 3am. As for the nightclubs most of them are packed with men but the bouncer let us know each time before we entered and I’m not vouching for serbian men’s behavior in the clubs although we didn’t have any problems ourselves.

Solo travel experience

I felt very safe. I applied the same precautions I would use traveling alone anywhere else. I call it the ugliest beautiful city full of history.

Solo travel experience

I liked the Church of St. Sava, the White Palace, the fortress in Belgrade (the sunset was nice) and I went for a drink one evening after a tour of street art in Savamala. I mainly ate around Skadarlija and felt safe the whole time.

Solo travel experience

Belgrade is amazing. It might be a bit difficult to find your way around, as a lot of it is written in Cyrillic alphabet, but people are very helpful and friendly. I felt really safe, and even much safer than in some really crowded tourist attractions in other cities. I participated in the Free Walk Around Belgrade - 20th-century Tour, it was very nice, showed many attractions and told the story of Serbia from what has happened in recent years. As for food, I really liked the Manufaktura restaurant.

I feel quite safe in public places, though I've had some unpleasant experiences in darker quieter streets outside the city centre in the evening hours. I take some precautions when I'm walking alone at night, and when I'm taking a taxi as well.

I've been living in Belgrade for 8 years. I've come home from parties at 2am, 4am or 6am all alone, never had any issues whatsoever. Even cat calling in the street isn't very common. Men can get into trouble with each other over a club they're supporting or if they're provoking one another, but women, I don't think there's any issue with that. Men can be pushy in clubs but you just need to be smart about it and talk to the security and you'll be just fine. I've never been followed, touched or anything similar to that when walking alone no matter the time of day.

Belgrade is generally very sagfe, but as any bigger city can have examples of pickpocketing, mainly in public transport, so keep the eyes on your bags. The crime rate is very low. Our city has made an effort to improve safety measures, mostly in the tourist areas and city center. On the other side, not all the parts of Belgrade are beautiful, but they are pretty much safe, and there is no "do not go there" zone.

Belgrade is pretty much safe, even places outside of the center. Some pickpocketing could happen in public transportation, so watch your stuff. Sexual harassment, rape, murder is very rare. But, in general, stick to the central places at night.

Belgrade was a very beautiful place. We stayed in the house of Boris Triunovic, whom we met on couchsurfing in Belgrade. He hosted us in a very loving way. He gave us information about Belgrade and its historical places. You can easily visit all local places in Belgrade on foot and by bus.

Belgrade is a wonderful city, full of life. I highly recommend trying out the Balkan cuisine. The places that impressed me the most and are worth visiting, were the restaurants in Skadarlija street and the "House of Flowers", which is Tito's mausoleum. I also visited Kalemegdan with a view of the Sava and Danube rivers, and the temple of St. Sava, which are probably the two most important symbols of Belgrade.
