Safety index

Safety at night:Moderate

Bali generally has a warm community and a lot of tourists around, providing some sense of safety. However, walking alone at night isn't recommended mainly due to poorly lit areas and uneven sidewalks. Moreover, while violent crime is lower, petty crimes such as pickpocketing or bag-snatching can occur, especially in crowded areas or tourist hotspots. Hiring a reputable taxi or using a ride-sharing app is a good option when you have to move around at night.

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Bali, including buses and minivans, is generally reliable. Most locals use these means of transport, making it relatively safe during its operational hours. However, there could be instances of overcrowding during peak hours and the routes aren't always straightforward, which might be challenging for a foreign traveler. Taxis are more convenient, although it's essential to use a reputable company. It's advisable to stay cautious and informed about your journey details.

Street harassment:Low

Bali generally has a welcoming and respectful mindset towards women, both locals and tourists. Street harassment is usually minimal and less commonly encountered compared to some other global tourist destinations, but it can occur occasionally like anywhere else. The harassment might take the form of persistent street vendors and over-friendly locals. It's always important to stay vigilant, practise good safety habits, and be assertive when necessary.

Petty crimes:Moderate

Bali witness some occurrences of petty crimes like pickpocketing or bag snatching, particularly in crowded places and on beaches. Also, drink spiking and credit card fraud are not unheard of. Always be vigilant about your belongings and surroundings. Nevertheless, locals are generally friendly and helpful.

Tap water:Very unsafe

Drinking tap water in Bali is strongly discouraged due to high contamination risks. Often it's not treated to a level making it safe to consume directly from the tap. It's recommended to drink only bottled or purified water to avoid any potential health implications like Bali belly.

Solo travel experience

I felt quite safe travel solo in Bali. As I don't ride motorbikes and was told that driving in Bali was not easy, I chose to rent a car with a driver sharing my daily itinerary and that cost me around 20 euros per day. Never felt unsafe with the driver. I stayed in a private villa in Ubud for 70 euros per night and the place was huge with a private pool which I found quite inexpensive. Food was amazing and cheap

Couple travel experience

It is safe. Spent 10 days in Bali. We stayed in Ubud most of the time. Recommend renting a scooter. Go see Keck fire dance at Uluwatu temple. Go see rice fields. It’s pretty. We also bought a day tour online to Nusa Penida which is a small island next to Bali. Did snorkeling and some sightseeing over there. Bali is beautiful. Love it!

Solo travel experience

I was solo traveling in Bali and I can say that Bali is a good place to solo travel and pretty safe. You just have to be smart, but like you would be anywhere you go solo.

Solo travel experience

I spent 3 weeks in Bali in September. It was a solo travel trip. I had a wonderful time! I always felt safe. I hired a driver, who drove me everywhere I wanted to go. I was in Ubud, Seminyak and Jimbaran. I love Bali.

Solo travel experience

Was there for a little less than a month, had an amazing time. A great place for solo travellers, it's very safe and people are super friendly. Lots ot tourists in the main city areas yet not hard to find quite and peaceful places to stay. Spent about 40 dollars per day(including diving and medical bills), while spending pretty generously. Amazing diving places on the islands. Very recommended 🌺

Bali was a blast. Definitely felt safe to solo travel as a woman. I usually booked dorms in hostels which was very cheap ~10€/night usually including breakfast. Some parts of Bali are Muslim where I felt a little unsafer tbh but still fine. I can definitely recommend going to an ashram for yoga and meditation practice if you’re into that (I’ve been to ananda ashram in Ubud). 🧘🏼‍♀️

Bali was awesome for me! Had a blast exploring, felt super safe, and getting around was a breeze. Beaches, temples, and yummy food—so many cool things to do. Bali's a perfect mix of adventure and chill vibes. Loved every bit of it!

Couple travel experience

Bali was an amazing experience. Don't travel during December if you can't tolerate heat. Always carry water and local currency. Most places have toilets, but they will charge if you visit temples, etc. Local food and beach clubs are a must-try. If you go shopping, always bargain to half the price they say. Overall safe, but you'll find a lot of people trying to scam you, so be aware.

Felt totally safe. Too much spiritual woo woo from the digital nomads capitalising on people’s vulnerabilities. Full of lovely locals. Tourists can be idiots. It’s an easy holiday if you don’t want to think too much

Solo travel experience

I spent almost 3 weeks exploring Bali and the island Gili T. I have been at many solo adventures, however this is in the top. I felt so safe the entire time. The people there is the kindest and most loving I have ever encountered. The food was delicious, the waves were spectacular and made surfing even more joyable, I met the most amazing people on the way, which was so easy as everyone is so warm hearted. I avoided Canggu, as it has become even more touristy after Covid-19, and should have turned into a true party destination. Which was not what I wanted to explore. Instead I went volcano hiking, snorkeling with sea turtles, surfing enormous waves, eat local food, trekking rice fields, catching waterfalls and much more 🙌🏼 10/10 can highly recommend
