Is Australia Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Australia is generally safe for solo female travelers. The country employs strict law enforcement and locals are known for their friendly attitude towards tourists. However, like any other place, certain common-sense precautions need to be taken, especially at night, such as not walking alone in deserted areas or parks. Wildlife encounters can also pose a threat since Australia is home to some of the world's most poisonous animals. Overall, with a bit of planning and vigilance, it can be a fantastic and safe destination for solo female travelers.

Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Australia is generally a safe place at night, as long as you maintain a common sense approach. Cities like Melbourne and Sydney have a vibrant nightlife that is heavily patrolled by police, making the main streets relatively safe. However, it's always wise to avoid isolated or poorly lit areas, and always be aware of your surroundings. Solo female travelers should consider using reputable transportation companies when traveling at night. Overall, the primary concern should be having a good awareness of the situation around you.

Public transportation:Safe

Australia's public transportation systems, including buses, trains, and trams, are widely recognized to be safe and convenient. While usual vigilance is always necessary, particularly during late-night travel, the majority of routes are well-lit, monitored, and serviced frequently. Authorities take safety and security seriously and there is generally a helpful culture among the commuters.

Street harassment:Low

Australia is generally a respectful and welcoming place with a prominently laid-back culture where street harassment isn't a widespread problem. However, like all places, there can be isolated incidents. Instances of street harassment vary from city to city, and also depend on the time of day and the area you are in. Overall, Australia prioritizes safety and respect but always be alert and aware of your surroundings as an individual traveler.

Petty crimes:Low

Australia is generally a safe country with low rates of petty crime. However, like in any other place in the world, there can be isolated incidents of pickpocketing or purse-snatching, particularly in crowded, tourist-heavy places. Travelers are advised to take basic precautions like keeping their belongings secure and being aware of their surroundings, especially in crowded places or at night. While Australia ranks well in terms of safety, it is always best to stay vigilant to avoid any possible petty crimes.

Tap water:Very safe

Australia's tap water is well-regulated and considered some of the safest in the world. Strict Australian water quality guidelines are put in place to ensure clean, potable water is available country-wide. Therefore, it is generally safe to drink tap water anywhere in Australia.

I traveled solo, and it was amazing! Felt very safe and enjoyed every minute of it. It was super easy to meet people. There was lots to do, and it felt like a place where there was always something to do with whatever group of people you meet.

Solo travel experience

I’ve been to Sydney, Brisbane and Coffs Harbour by solo. It was safety and people were kind to me. In Coffs Harbour, I stayed at Ausee family’s house with other travelers. We sheared a lot of experiences and had a wonderful time by chatting, swimming in the pool, playing some games and visiting the beach.

Solo travel experience

I highly recommend Australia, it's quite safe. I went from downtown Adelaide to the wine region, and then took a ferry to Kangaroo Island. As I was returning by ferry, I went to the Grampians, which are located in the state of Victoria. The waterfall there is beautiful. Then I headed off to the Great Ocean Road, saw the Twelve Apostles rocks, and then went to Melbourne to end the trip. On the last night my friends were exhausted, so I took a train into the city and took a walk alone. I used Uber and wasn't worried at all.

To everyone who is considering going to Australia as solo women. Do it! It was the best decision I’ve made in my life. The people, the beaches, the nature, friends who became family. I never felt so at home and want to go back!

Solo travel experience

I flew to Melbourne. I went on a one-day tour of the Great Ocean Road (stopping at many other places), as well as another day trip to Phillip Island. Then I flew to Adelaide. There, I booked a two-day tour (through Intrepid Travel) to Kangaroo Island. The tour included a ferry trip there and back to the island, accommodation for 1 night, and sightseeing such as wildlife (kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, echidnas, cockatoos, seals, etc.), beaches, sandboarding in Little Sahara, lighthouse, Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch, Flinders Chase National Park, and much more. The tour ended back in Adelaide.
