Is Amsterdam Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Amsterdam is generally safe for solo female travelers. People are friendly, and English is widely spoken, which helps in navigating through the city. The public transportation system is efficient and reliable, making it easy to move around. However, as in any major city, it's always important to stay vigilant especially during the night and in lesser crowded areas. Instances of petty crimes like pickpocketing can happen, so be mindful of your belongings and avoid showing off expensive items. Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Amsterdam is generally a safe city for solo female travelers, even at night. The city is well lit and usually busy with people, which contributes to a sense of security. However, like any other city, it is always smart to remain vigilant, especially in less crowded or poorly lit areas. It serves you well to avoid secluded places during the night. Public transport is reliable and runs late into the night, which is another helpful aspect. Take the usual precautions you would in any other city and perhaps try to stick to busier areas where there are other people around. Additionally, locals are usually friendly and willing to assist if needed.

Public transportation:Very safe

Public transportation in Amsterdam is well-managed and secure. Trams, buses and metros are all monitored with CCTV cameras and regular patrols by transportation officials. Most locals and tourists alike find it a reliable and safe means for commuting, even during late hours. Also, people are generally respectful and helpful. Always remember to stay aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings secure as you would in any international city.

Street harassment:Low

Amsterdam tends to be quite respectful towards women out in public. While the possibility of an occasional comment can't be completely ruled out, it is generally referred to as a safe and welcoming city for solo female travelers. The instances of street harassment are much lower compared to many other destinations. Always remain cautious and aware of your surroundings, especially if traveling alone at night.

Petty crimes:Low

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is a relatively safe city. Petty crimes such as purse snatching or pickpocketing can occur, particularly in crowded tourist hotspots and on public transportation. However, the majority of tourists do not experience any issues. It's always advisable to keep your belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings to prevent minor incidences from occurring.

Tap water:Very safe

The tap water in Amsterdam, is of high quality and considered one of the best in the world. Locals and tourists alike can drink it without any concern. The water undergoes strict checks and regulations ensuring its purity and cleanliness, eliminating the need for purchasing bottled water.

Safety: me and my friend L. (also a woman) felt very in this city. Things to do: a lot of sightseeing and museums, for example the heineken one. Food: lots of great vegan options in almost all restaurants we stopped by. Accommodation: we stayed together at the Mercure Hotel, so it was a little bit more expensive. But 100% worth the price. Transport: we travelled mostly with the train (very punctual) and once with the taxi due to a storm, which caused all public transportation to stop working.

Solo travel experience

It was my second time in Amsterdam. I bought a day pass for 60€, so I got into the museums for free. But you have to make a reservation for the museums 1 month in advance. I tried many potatoes, the best one was at "Fabel Friet". My recommendation was blind ketchup, truffle mayonnaise and Parmesan cheese. It tastes incredibly good. I had stroopwafel at Queen Stroopwafel and it was very good. You can visit safely on your own.

Solo travel experience

Went on a solo trip to Amsterdam in March 2024, I stayed for 3 days and really enjoyed my visit. It was my first time in Amsterdam and the Netherlands, but it was very easy to travel alone and I always felt safe even though it was my first time travelling alone. It’s easy to get around the Netherlands by train as they have good connections and Amsterdam is a perfect city for walking. They also have free ferries across the IJ-canal that run basically every other minute throughout the day so it’s very comfortable if you live across the river (like I did) and want to explore the city centre. I felt safe in Amsterdam, and there were always lots of people around you, even in the evenings. I think it’s a city where its easy to meet new people. Very nice to just walk around the city and see all the diffrent parts of Amsterdam. It’s totally unique in its way. Would love to go back!

Felt very safe walking around at night. There were lots of people around and I did not get catcalled at all (unlike in other countries). I was a very happy camper! Trams were also super easy to use!!!

Couple travel experience

I was in the Netherlands with my partner - he was born there. It's the most beautiful city I've ever been to. I felt safe out there on my own, even though our apartment was in the red light district. Public transportation is easy to understand and also inexpensive. Attention: you only have access to the trains with a ticket! The food etc. was rather expensive but very tasty. In addition, you can be at the sea in about 50 minutes!

Group travel experience

I went to Amsterdam in first week of December and I loved it! Some key points I remember: They are great for dairy food (cheese, eggs etc) so I’d get some form of this in every meal. Tap water is safe to drink but they will charge you for water if you ask in a restaurant so perhaps carry a water bottle around. The people were very friendly and would happily take pictures of me and my friend and then strike up conversations. It’s a very diverse city and there are also many tourists from around Europe and US. I have a sweet tooth so I would get an oli bollon every day! The transport links are fairly easy (didn’t end up paying for some buses and just walked on if they didn’t have a barrier - otherwise remember to to tap in AND out) Nightlife we went to club air (bit boujee with quite strict staff), supper club, and jimmy choo (all sort of r&b, afrobeats, Dutch rap vibes). We went to Smokey coffee shop and im quite petite and ate half a muffin and felt too high and was sick lol, so pace yourself if you know you have a low tolerance. (My friend on the other hand was completely fine). no queues at airport and new machines so I took more liquids and a side bag Sex museum was fun and relatively cheap!

Family travel experience

It was cold as North Pole!! Joking aside, it was freezing, and that really makes difficult to walk for long hours outside. 🥶 City view is always amazing, summer or winter. You can find things to do, museums to see and ofc if you try something new there are coffeeshops everywhere but it was not my thing actually so i cant say more about that:) but the smell was heavy and it was all over the streets so if you have any problem with that i dont recommend. Its a beautiful city, lot of people from all around the world, if you dont enter like back streets you never have a problem with safety. You xan also find any kinds of food, if you have special preferences i’m sure you’ll find something for yourself too. (we eat halal food and we could find it everywhere)

Solo travel experience

I traveled here with a friend of mine. We walked everyone and took a train once. I never ever felt unsafe at any point and everyone really kept to themselves. Because it was cold I feel like there was less to do but honestly I travel to see the place itself and its architecture/landscape and to eat food. It is a lot of walking and I would not recommend any shoes besides sneakers that are good. I will say to do a canal tour, I did one with my Airbnb host. Try fable friet, go to a stroopwaffle stand and try the smash burger place meijard. I wanted to try more places but those I remember the names of. I also went to more places but none stuck out to me too too much. The food was not bad though, don’t get me wrong. I used my credit card for mostly everything but did get euros for when I wanted to pay my Airbnb host for the canal ride and to give money to the man who gives food to the pigeons. I think I spent around 300 probably less in the four days I was there not including my Airbnb. My Airbnb was great and it was in a quiet location away from city center. We took the ferry to and from every day. If anyone wants to know who the host was I would love to get you connected. I didn’t have an itinerary just went along with my days but if any questions feel free to ask and i’ll answer to the best of my knowledge!

I think it has been very safe to me. I haven't had any physical attack on the street or being threatened by strangers. During night, I feel free to walk around outside alone. But recently I heard there are some robbery at cars.

Typical European city safety. Safe for female solo travelers. At any time of the day. There are some areas that are not so pleasant to walk in the night, but not dangerous. It’s very touristy as well.

Generally it's very safe during the day and night. I haven't had a single problem, I live here for 12 years now. Watch your pockets in crowded places. Avoid putting yourself in awkward situations. Watch out for those space cookies that can have an expected effect. :-) Some people don't know how much to eat and then sometimes they end up having bad trips.

Amsterdam is a very safe city. Having lived there almost all my life I can say that it’s probably one of the safest cities in the world. There are a lot of lovely people there. But we all know that wherever you go you should always be a bit cautious.

Amsterdam is safe and a nice place to travel to. Just like other cities be careful of your belongings in touristic areas. Public transport is safe, only maybe drunk people in late night. Overall safe place

Very safe. Except touristy places. Local people are trustworthy and friendly. Some drunk tourists create nuisances but nothing that is not seen in other cities. I feel safe to speak my mind, express my creativity and sexuality and in general just be myself.

I live in this city for six years and never encountered any problems. I must say that I live in the city center. I used to take a lot of walks alone during the night and it was always safe. It might differ if you live in Nieuw-west or the Bijlmer.

It was really great meeting new people visit the city but I think 2-3 days are enough and think to reserve things before like Anne frank house or museum. There are a lot of French people (if you are French and don’t really speak good English). Good point they speak really good English
