You're in for a treat! NO is my fave American city. Try the hop on hop off bus. You will get to see the whole city and can stop for sightseeing wherever you want and join another bus later. Definitely go to the garden district (the bus goes there) and try some boudin balls and a hurricane at Pat O'Brians. The whole French quarter is amazing so be prepared to do lots of walking and exploring. I stayed at India House hostel on Canal Street once and its a safe, clean place. A bit of a walk to downtown but worth it. I stayed at city house hostel during the same stay and found it weird and felt a bit unsafe. Any hotel on Canal or in the quarter will be nice.
