How safe is Albania?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Albania generally boasts a favorable safety record and the locals are quite friendly and hospitable. Still, like in any country, some caution is advised, particularly at night. While the central parts of major cities like Tirana are relatively secure, unlit streets and desolate areas can present some risks. Walking alone at night might not be especially dangerous, but it is sensible to be vigilant, avoid less populated areas, and use common sense to avoid potential hazards. It's always beneficial to stay in well-lit areas and preferably to travel in a group, especially during the night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Most of the public transportation in Albania, which mostly include buses and minibuses called 'furgons', is generally considered safe for travel. However, they can be crowded and may not run on fixed schedules. Taxis are plentiful in cities, and it's ideal to ensure they're licensed ones. At times, drivers may not adhere to safety regulations closely. It's always a good start to familiarize yourself with the usual routes and fares. Most travelers have not reported any instances of harassment or other concerns while using public transportation.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

In Albania, you might face occasional instances of street harassment, including catcalling and persistent stares, particularly in the bigger cities like Tirana. However, many women have also reported that locals are generally friendly, helpful and highly respectful to women. It truly depends on the exact location and time. Traveling during the day and sticking to populated areas can often help reduce such instances. Always trust your instincts and stay aware of your surroundings.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Albania has a relatively low level of petty crime, especially targeted towards tourists. The majority of Albanians are equally respectful towards both locals and tourists. However, it is always crucial to be vigilant of your belongings and surroundings, particularly in busier urban areas. Incidences such as pickpocketing or bag snatching are not common, but can occur. Using common precautions can help ward off such incidents.

Durrës, Solo travel

Was in Durrës, Albania from June 1st till the 5th. It was amazing, the food was good, the weather was sunny and warm and overall a great experience. Super inexpensive all together. The only downside was the transport, the apps don’t work well and the taxis take cash and that not everyone speak English (but managed to communicate still). Over all felt very safe, and is family friendly. It’s like being in Spain but much cheaper and less of a crowd. I went on a vr-tour where the tour guides showed the nature and told about some local history, it was just the perfect adventure and saw beautiful nature. If I was staying longer I would honor hikes around the area to visit more hidden gems. Overall loved the experience and will definitely travel there again.

Tirana, Solo travel

I regularly travel to Albania because I like it there so much. Every time I land there I feel at peace. I’ve never been in a situation where someone won’t help me, even if we aren’t speaking the same language. The food is good, the nature is beautiful, and it felt safe. Only issue was the pollution and littering for me.

Albania, Group travel

Be ready for heavy and chatotic traffic, cars are doing whatever. When we first arrived at night it felt unsafe but later i felt safer than in most of big European cities. People go out at night because its hot during the day, so night time is very vibrant. Have cash, nobody accepts cards. If you can travel around the country, Blue eye, Thermal springs, Hidden beaches.

Albania, Group travel

Amazing country with amazing mountains. Did hiking for 5 days after went to the sea. It was the most surprising trip. I was surprised by the mountain views and tracking routes, how prepared they were and comfortable

Tirana, Solo travel

Tirana is a great city. I mostly walked around or took the public bus, which was rather easy to understand and the people helped me. Walking around at night I felt mostly safe. I would recommend soing a walking tour to really see the whole city!

Tirana County, Couple travel

Spent 103€ for accommodation (9 nights) Everything else is also very affordable. You will be taking buses everywhere (unless you want a taxi/rent a car). Don’t drink the water. I met up with a friend in Shkodër, traveled in a group of four to Tirana (go see the sky bar - it’s free, and a walking tour), quick detour to Ohrid in North Macedonia, then to Sarandë to surprise some friends. Amazing memories, welcoming country, and minimal tourists rn. Feel free to reach out if you have questions!

Tirana

Tirana is the capital city of Albania and you find all kind of people there. Anyways in all these years I’ve been living here, I have never felt unsafe. There are enough weirdos walking in every street but they seem harmless. I feel safe here and wouldn’t be worried of anyone or anything.

There are almost no crime or drugs in Tirana other than marijuana use The traffic rules are not followed strictly so be careful about crossing the street The taxi drivers have meters so that you don’t have to worry about getting overcharged
